Do modular helmets work? (not a joke)

I need to find a helmet that actually fits and won't fog my goggles. I have a huge melon and can't find even an xxx large moto cross that will fit worth a damn. I've tried every goggle I can find, carry 3 spares with me and still end up blind. I've tried a mod on, it fit comfortably. I just don't want to buy yet another lid if it will just fog up. I hope there is another pumpkin headed rider out there that has a suggestion. By the way - I'm not worried about the NMFH thing, since I look cool no matter what I wear!:)

I ride with two guys who have the Ski doo mod, and they both swear by them. On those nasty nasty days, when the rest of us are fogging up and freezing, they are grinning their butts off, even though we all make fun of them. We never ride trails and they get along with them great. I would wear one, but I feel claustrophobic and have a hard time breathing in them. They say you just have regulate your breathing a bit different, but this guy requires a lot of air, so I will stick to my moto helmet.

Best setup for not fogging I have ever used. Also keeps you really warm when it is cold out. Had problems with full face shields frosting over from the moisture of exhaling, the modular worked like a charm and never had an issue.

One thing I didn't like about it, and it's only downfall, is that the older ones weren't that safe, and I doubt they could withstand a pretty good crash/impact to the head. I believe the new ones are much better/safer though.

I have both, but find the modular too heavywhen in the mountains.I find I only use it when it is real cold,or trail riding.I fog everything when playing in the hills so extra goggles are my savior.I am going to make a dry rack for the extra pair under the hood.:beer;

i had one a long time ago back when they first came out... wore it for one season...

here's my issues with 'em:

1. Cold (frostbitten cheeks even though i had a balaclava on in -10 weather, I've ridden all day in -25 weather with an open face an not gotten the 'bite)
2. Noisy
3. heavy
4. snow dust constantly on the inside from the poor seals
5. wet nose from the tampon after only 10 minutes of riding
6. breath holes clogged up on cold days making breathing difficult and forcing me to stop to chip out the ice pack
7. expensive (i've replaced it with a closed face HJC w/ leccy shield and an open with goggles for the same $$)

that being said, the drop down shield should be a standard feature on all helmets... best compromise, imho, is the scorpion exo helmets if you only want one lid... if you want the best you want a close face and an open

ODD!! Never had any of those problems. Still have mine and use it on cold days or if someone needs my spare. AND I'm WWWAAAAYYYY too old to care what others think as far as looks!

Modulars

I have modular that I will wear for trail riding only, they are quieter and warmer,:D however when in powder they can fog and freeze:( so you can't get it off! In the mountains moto-x is all I will wear now.

I have a big head, I got a Bell Moto 8 to fit when others didn't, its a motocross style, but right now, you can find them on clearence for about 185. Try them, you might lik it!

I've used my Lazer Modular for years and like it mainly because I wear glasses that fog up in goggles.

PROs: Keeps my head warm during brew breaks and my glasses don't fog up.

CONS: Too hot when working real hard or on warmer days. Also, DON'T forget to take the breath tampoon out at the end of the day or it get's real nasty!

I used a hjc modular (almost 2kg=4,4pounds:eek:) last year with electric visor= absolutely no fog, but it turned out to heavy for my neck.
Now using peltor open with built in hearing protectors (800g=1,76 pounds), doublevisor goggles combined with facemask and windproof comprehensive hood- seems to work fine this long.

I hAVE HAD BOTH and i will never use a modular agian the problem with them is in the mountians and boondocking it will damn near suffacate you. I would go with a moto helmet and carry three pairs of goggles the key to keeping goggles clean and fresh is if you stop for any reason take them off that way you wont fog them from heat from your head. I always take them off and set them on the bars. Basically keep them cold and keep the moisture out. Only time I use all three pair of mine is on deep powder days and it snowing to beat hell then it hard for any helmet modular or moto with goggles to not frost over.

I’ve used the modular (Older style) for 4 or 5 years now!

Here’s my observations:

They are heavy but you get use to it!
The mouth piece is a bit cumbersome but again you get use to it to.
The mouth piece snaps were always breaking! Keep a spare with me. Think they fixed that?
Don’t use the moisture absorption panty! Have almost inhaled the darn thing!
Some powder does get inside once in a while Ehhh, not too big of a problem.
The tube that attaches to the breath mask comes off. Only once in a while!! No biggie.
I think they’re very warm.
The only time it has ever fogged up on me was when I got stuck and was too lazy to take it off! I just raised the visor and the steam coming off my body did it in. Got back on the move and the air coming through the vents cleared it back up.
When your breathing hard after getting un-stuck. The mask does make it a bit hard to get a full breath!
The biggest down fall IMO is the cost of a new visor $100.00 Ouch!
I’ve had a couple visors come de-laminated and fog up in-between the lenses! Got 1 replaced under warrantee.

Looks!!! Makes me look good. BAR NONE!!

And for what it’s worth! You can sip a beer without taking it off! Oh! Did I say that.

I did'nt get used to it. Forced to stay home for work AND SLEDDING for three weeks because of a bad neck, so if you get probs with neck, check it up and stay out of heavy helmets

I bought a modular 3 years ago for very cold (20 below) occasional mn rides, hardly ever used it uintil last fall riding my bike, worked great for that, far superior in cold fall weather to my open face which would try to lift off above 50mph.

Good Luck

I have used the MOD (AKA Dork) lid since it first came out. Like said earlier it is heavy and you get use to it. The newer ones have better visability. I never fog up or get powder inside. Powder cna be in my face and over the hood all day and I have no issues. The hard breathing thing is all in the head. You get plenty of air but like other said you have to get use to it. I am fine with the mouth piece on in all riding conditions. If you have to dig out you need to lift the face piece and unsnap one side of the mouth piece to get more air and avoid over heating. The neck air does allow a lot of wind to hit you. I have not used the different attachments they provid eto prevent it. I carry a head condom for cold days. I have had frost bite on my neck and throat from the buckle and from not using a head condom. I like a motto helmet in the spring when it is warm and no powder but I refuse to give up the dork lid. My says its the best but caved in to peer pressure and uses the Motto and goggles now. I bust his balls every ride as he is always thawing and defrosting his goggles or switching pairs etc. I always tell him how cool he looks now though. It ussually results in the finger. Also when stopping on the trail you dont have to take you lid off and it is always warm. I do not even notice the weight of it after 5 years. Only way to go if you hate fogging up and like to see. With goggles you always have to stop and clear them you get a face full of snow. With the Dork you are riding while everyone else is wiping. More powder please. :)

i tried a lot of different styles of helmets and finally broke down and paid the price for a bv2s, then i bought an extra just in case they quit making them, absolutly the best helmet i have ever had. they have them on ebay for $320 to the house.

I have the old Modular and like it on colder days. i use the neck pieces and don`t have a problem with frost bite or snow inside the lid. I don`t put in the mask filter and it fills up with water from condensation, now some people will not like this but I just suck up the moisture. It gets cleaned all the time so I`m not worried about it being dirty and i don`t have to stop to drink, lol. On really cold days the holes on the side will freeze over and you`ll notice this because it gets harder to breathe. I carry something I can poke in the holes and clear it out without having to take my helmet off. Keys work well for this.

Helmet preferance?

I don't think there is one "best" helmet for all. It all depends on your riding style, and what you require in a helmet. I have several, and it took that many to figure out what I like best. My helmet is an arai vx-pro moto helmet. It fits good, keeps me warm, and has good venting, also I can see good with it on. Goggles are somtime a pain in the _ _ _. I carry a couple of pair. Also I have made a place to dry them under the hood. I prefer not to wear goggles all of the time, I guess I like the fresh air to hit me in the face! Good Luck finding what you like, and you will have a selection to choose from once you figure it out! -00's
