difference between dragon and rmk

I just bought a 08 700 RMK 155, whats the difference between the regular rmk and the dragon besides shocks, The sled I bought has the walker airs on it, so what else is different? As far as mods go whats the best bang for the buck, do they run pretty good stock? any minor upgades, don't have alot to spend, if I spend too much I'll have less $ to go out west ridin!!!!!

There are a lot of little things and nothing major. Search on it...this gets asked a lot.

I don't think the shocks were the only difference in 08, its the 09's that they changed alot on the dragon

On the 2009+ sleds the following are different:

-Shocks
-Rails
-Handlebars and switches
-graphics obviously

I am not sure but I think they also removed the front cooler on the Dragon, but left it on the RMK? (weight) Not positive on that.

In 2008 and before the major changes are graphics, and shocks. I think the rails and handlebars are the same.

On all 2009+ models the front end was changed, narrower plastic (better floatation) and a much better bumper was put in. Somewhere in there the tail light was moved from the seat to the rear tunnel. I'm not sure if that happened in 2008 or 2009.

I am sure there is something I have forgot but maybe someone else will chime in.

Brake rotors are different on Dragons in 2009 than the RMK. There is about a 5.5 lb difference in the two sleds.

07 dragon was only a dragon

08 they moved the tail light down and new spindles.
08 dragon had walker evans and a 5.5 riser red/dragon graphics
08 has ryde fx non rebuild able and a 3.75 riser and is white/rmk graphics

09 has the new nose, new rails, machined spindles, magnesium chaincase cover
09 rmk, black/rmk graphics, 5.5 riser, ryde fxs
09 dragons is white, has higher pressured walker evans than 07 and 08, pro tapers, iqr style brake, switches on dash

That 5lb difference must be that magnesium chain cover... yeah thats it...

It was a combination of the rails, brake rotor, handlebar/controls, chaincase cover and shocks. The RMK might have the mag chaincase cover as well. Most of it was in the shocks, the WE's save weight because they are chinzy and don't have springs.

My 09 800 RMK has the magnesium chain case cover.

If I didn't get my 09 D8 for so cheap, I was going to snow check a 2010 RMK. I've replaced the shocks anyway. I'm going to change out the rear suspension, so there's the majority of the changes. I do like the Pro Tapers and controls on the Dragon much better, but that can be done for $100. I really like the blue hood on this years RMK. Sweet looking.

Didn't they have problems with them cracking when they were plastic? Maybe Polaris got sick of replacing them.

The plastic chaincase covers were warping from heat. Polaris came out with a metal plate with nubs to create pressure points on the lower portion of the cover. Some guys had them leak after being loaded and unloaded with forklifts at the dealer also.

I'm pretty sure my 09 rmk has the same rails as a dragon, and a mag chaincase cover. The 09 dragons also have a new single ply track, while the rmks are double like the 08's, I think.

I'm pretty sure they are different but post of a pic of your rails and we will know for sure.

For most guys the differences between the two sleds is a lost cause. Most guys change shocks, bars/ risers, etc. I shoulda bought the RMK and saved a little money on the total package as I've changed all of the "Dragon" "upgrades". I still love it though. I think the real weight savings was the front cooler delete and the bogie wheels, which some people have added to their Ds anyway. You have the same sled in a different wrapper.
P.S. who really needs a slotted brake rotor on a mountain sled?:)

Ok, here's the deal with the rails according to Polaris part numbers.

2010 Dragon RMK and RMK sleds share the same rails, but are different than 2008 and 2009.

2009 Dragon RMK and RMK sled share the same rails and are different than 2008.

2008 Dragon RMK and RMK sleds share the same rails. However, there was a late production 2008 Dragon RMK/RMK that had the same rails as 2009.

One more difference...the 2009 Dragon RMK had the new sway bar and the RMK had the old sway bar. I assume that the plastic would be different as well. Once again...all according to part numbers.
