Diesel snowmobiles

I am guessing that weight would be an issue seems how diesels are built much stronger then a 2 or a 4 stroke? Time will tell.

With current sled technology seems clutching is going to be the largest thing to deal with, we know they build power but they don't build RPM's , if you can get the power to turn it maybe an over driven gear box between the engine and primary. But you had better build twice the power as gas because the oil burner runs at about half the RPM's.

I love the persuit of things out of the box so if they fail 10 times before some one gets it right then my hat is off to them all:beer;

Dang, it is summer time isn't it?.

Intersting concept, tons of torque, but yeah, clutching would be a huge issue, probably would be hard on belts, that little rpm, but hey, cool idea!

funny how in the blog they say that 2-strokes are loud and smelly, yet they used a diesel which is usally louder and smellier.

wow, polaris use to have a cvt diesel quad that if dropped in a sled would kill that thing, only cool part about a diesel would be to turbo it add nos and propane injection to a small motor to get huge hp

you could put a gear case on it say 1:2 ratio or something like that make the clutch spine twice as fast or the motor kinda like the yamaha's only in revers. just a thought.

weight reduction would be an easy, just remove the 3 cats and DPF canister, lol. So who would be the first one to have a stack coming off the tunnel? :p

Who knows, everyone thought diesels couldn't race either and look at what Audi did with the TDI at Lemans for the past few years. As for cold weather, driving on the highway isn't any colder then busting through the backcountry. Temperatures at 10K in the backcountry would be the temperatures at 10K on the highway as well.

Remember the Polaris diesel ATV's?
We got a couple when I worked at the local shop... Only sold 1... The guy took it up to his ranch at about 6000 ft and it would not run... Needless to say, we sent them back to reparis.

Things have slightly changed since then in the diesel world. Heck if we all thought that way we anyone have bought diesel pickups? The diesels of the late 80's were nothing to be happy with that is for sure, matter of fact all the way up to the mid 90's.
