Dyeing/staining plastic???

Is there any way to Dye, stain, or otherwise change the color of a plastic part?

I bought a plastic skid plate for my sled and its nowhere close to the right shade of blue, is there anything out there that I can use to try and darken it up a bit or should I just forget it and go a different direction all together?

Not too hot on putting it on the sled the way it is now, not even close to the same color:(

There is no way paint is going to stick to it being that it is on the bottom of the sled being brushed by snow constantly.

People dye plastic mouldings and front facias on cars all the time. Usually they are turning gray trim black, so I don't know how well automotive dyes would work on bright blue. Some mfg's make custom colors that you could try on the back side of the skid plate.

You could try painting it with an automotive style paint or catalyzed , I`d probably check with a local autobody or paint shop and see what they would recommend since paint shops paint plastic auto bumpers that are alot more flexable than your skid plate, they have a flex additive they put in the paint. not actually sure how it would hold up to rubbing on the snow like you mentioned but would be better than paint in a can.

Good Luck, Darren

That's true, I hadn't thought about that... there's all kinds of flexible automotive plastics that get painted without flaking when you push up against them...

I wonder if there is any way to find out what the paint code is for my sled?

seth,

sorry to see your not happy with the float plate mishap..im sure youll get it worked out..

anyways..you can take your sled hood into a "good" body shop and they should have a camera that they will set on your hood and it will analyze the paint and shoot out a paint color...

i did this to my street bike helmet and had them match me up a pint of paint to spray the bike...was a perfect match...

just make sure that baby is nice and clean before you take it there..

good luck bro. :beer;

Glad to hear that it can be done... :D:beer;:beer;

I'd just take it back and trade it for a black one. Black goes with everything.

Have considered it for sure, but wanted to see what my options were b4 I look into seeing if I can return it as I bought it online and it was a special thing cause I wanted blue...

I have used the Krylon on the wind guards on my Rev. worked great, but you do have to touch up at the start of the season. Not sure on a skid plate though. Not alot of rubbung where I put it

Truck bed liner they have that stuff in all kinds of different colors they might have a hard time matching it and it might put a pound or 2 on it but it would look tough and last forever. I did all my rocker pannels fender flairs and my headache rack on my truck and it looks great.

Well, I did some research tonight and found a company that sells plastic dyes in a spray can and it looks like they even have it in a dark blue that I am hoping will be pretty dang close to what I am looking for... what I'm thinking is that anything as dark as the sled or darker will look pretty decent... Heck, for $20 I think its worth giving it a shot on the backside of it anyway:D
