did you start out riding atv before sledding

I'd like to know how many riders out there rode atv's before riding snowmobiles. I'd like to know is did you put your atv second to snowmobiling afterwards. And how was your first experience in the powder. I've been riding now for over 15 yrs and still going strong. I even turned on several of my buddy's to sledding and one of my buddy is obsessed with the sport and today he owns 5 sleds. I've been trying to get my nepthew into the sport but he won't give up his atv. So are you a atver in the offseason and do you wait for the snow to come so you can ride your sled.

I had ridden friends quads in the past only a handful of times, I wouldn't consider it a past hobby however. I did get into quads personally about 5 years ago (been sledding for 7) just for something to do after the snow melted. Sledding is FAR and away my highest passion for recreation. I've always LOVED spending time in the mountains with any excuse I could find, now I have an excuse to go virtually every weekend year round! It is kinda cool to explore our favorite sledding spots in the summer with the quads. I much prefer the 'clean' advantage to sleds... you can go out riding all day and you and your sled are both just as clean as when you left the house!

Rode and raced dirt bikes growing up. Family also had snowmobiles (SkiDoo Olympic 399). When I got on my own I rode bikes and sleds. Sold both and bought ATV and thought that was the way to go in 1986. Got back onto sleds 4 years ago and what a difference, I would ride sleds 365 days a year if I could. Still have the ATV that I ride a little in the summer and use for plowing and some work on the property and of course hunting season. To me, the snowmobiles are much more of a rush because of the acceleration and the fact that any track I leave in February is gone in July and nobody knows I was there. Scenery in the winter is better in my opinion also.

Started riding an ATV at about 11 and had a dirtbike at 14. Sold it at 16 and got into cars and trucks. Started dirtbiking again about 4 years ago. Started sledding cause I was really into dirtbiking that season and then it snowed so I needed something to keep the adrenaline rush going. Now I wouldn't trade my sled for anything. Just got back into quadding as well since a lot of my sledding buddies don't have bikes.

I grew up on atv's and raced all throughout highschool. Had some old ditch banging sleds as well. Back then I would have put atv's first, did a lot of ice racing in the winter. One trip west to the mountains on a sled changed all of that. It's all about the powder now.:face-icon-small-coo

I definitely "rode" an ATV before a sled, I suppose it transfers somewhat to a trail type experience. I think any recreational equipment experience is better than none when it comes time to try something new. I would honestly say that mountain biking a lot when I was younger taught me more than anything else because it's all about balance....and really, every sport is all about balance. I started dirtbiking the same time as sledding

Good friend of mine was a pro mountain biker of the "extreme" variety...he rides a borrowed sled twice a year and kicks everyone's arse.

Two wheels only... other than that, might as well just drive a truck :P

Agreed. Quads are good to go fishing or somewhere you're too drunk to ride a bike. I get a kick out of all this UTV craze....as if it's some kind of sport? Guys with a $20,000 side by side quad that's as big as a Suzuki Tracker, but costs 4 times as much, has 60hp, and you have to trailer it to where you're going :face-icon-small-con  :face-icon-small-con

I've been riding atv's since they first came out in the mid 80's and have had maybe around 20 different bikes in the last 25 years and today I have 3 quads all set up for the dunes and a Polaris Razor S side by side. I love my razor cause when you've had as many crashes on bike as I have it makes it a little easy for a old man like me to get out and keep up with my boy's and grandkids. But I still get excited when fall comes and the first snow starts to fly in the mountains. So when fall comes the atv will go in the shop and the sleds will come out. I put sledding first and atv's second.

Well... as a guy who is into rock crawling, I think utv's are kinda cool because they're basically like a little buggy you can roll without even using a winch.

They're fun, but I can't call them a "SPORT" anymore than I can pretend that Jeeping is a sport :D

UTV's are an awesome machine, hands down one of the most fun things to do in the summer besides two wheels. As for it being a sport it is a sport, there is sanctioned races just like any other sport. There is WORCS, LOORS Regionals, Score, and GOR on the east coast that all have large utv gatherings. Its a growing sport that will be in the Xgames summer of 2015.

I was riding a Rupp American 40 before I was born and haven't quit since. Had some wheelers along the way but they just don't do it for me. Had lots of fun on some 2 wheelers but 6-8 weeks off waiting for limbs to heal doesn't work well with my job.

Started with atv, Was buying a new one every other year, thought it was the best thing since sliced bread. Then I rode my buddys sled one weekend, after that I knew I had to have one. That's when the atv went to the back of the garage, within the 3 months I had 2 sleds. Now its buy a new sled every other year.

I was sledding before I could walk ... first time I ever rode a full size sled solo I was 4.

I didn't ride an ATV until I was 7 or 8 ....

Wow... that's just kinda ghey.

That's about all I have to say about that.

You have no idea what these things are capable with a comment like that. Once you actually see a purpose built rzr with a professional driver you might rethink that! 93mph out of a rzr 900 in sand that is a legal Lucas Oil Short Course race car is something to see! Just a smaller version of the Lucas oil trucks.
