Did anybody hear this ??? Nasa plans on Nuking the Moon on Oct 9th ??

Nasa prepares to bomb the moon
Nasa scientists are preparing to launch a space mission from Cape Canaveral carrying a missile that will fire a hole deep in the surface of the moon.

The aim is to see whether any traces of water will be revealed by the disruption caused to the planet's surface. Nasa will analyse the space cloud caused by the explosion for any sign of water or vapour.
Scientists expect the impact to blast out a huge cloud of dust, gas and vaporized water ice at least 6 miles high - making it visible from Earth.

If the search is successful it could provide vital supplies for a moonbase. The moon is mostly dry desert but ice may be trapped in craters which never see sunlight.
The unmanned Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite mission (LCROSS) will fire a Centaur rocket into the surface at twice the speed of a bullet.
An accompanying spacecraft will orbit the moon for a year looking for possible landing sites for astronauts. The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter will spend at least a year creating the most minutely detailed map of the moon's surface ever seen.
The vessel swill be the first American spacecrafts to make a lunar trip since 1999.
Astronomers have long thought that a rain of comets brought water to the arid, lifeless moon over billions of years.
In the past few years, at least two American spacecraft reported the presence of water by detecting hints of hydrogen and oxygen - the constituents of water - frozen deep in the darkest recesses of craters around both the north and south lunar poles.

Why??? They whine about global warming, they whine about deficits in the economy. Watch something malfuction and they split the moon in half. Leave the poor thing alone.

are you guys serious? Who gives a crap? Why would we do this? Won't make a difference in the world?

Can y'all see the end of your own noses, cause you seem pretty blind to me. This is one of the first steps in getting people to Mars. Figuring out how we can employ the moon in the best way for staging purposes. Getting to Mars should be the forefront of Nasa/the space community.

Screw it...I feel like I'm talking at a herd of cats. If you honestly can't see what benefits we have already recieved from the space program, there is no way to show what gains we will reap in the future.

i agree rmk7sledhead.theres no dought we need nasa to keep exploring.
the malfuction moon splitting in half reply made me laugh:)

Wonder what the effects would be it there was some kind of propellant there that reacts with the bomb greatly increasing the strength. yea yea i know i watch the scifi channel to much  seems like some one at NASA is bored and wants to blow up the moon

This is bull**** I am calling my congressman and getting the moon designated a "WILDERNESS AREA" That way no one will EVER go there again!

look folks heres the deal ..and all those that don't give a crap ....."YOU BETTER" !!!

think of this for a minute ...stick with me now...

they said that they expect a plume of dust that will go up 6 miles ....nice eh ..now howabout this .....last time I checked the Moon has like zip for gravity right ....you still with me ..so this 6 miles up worth of who knows what goes into it atmosphere kinda like what we would have ......a few months later the whole moon is covered in this sh1t .....

Hello !!!! no more light at night .......like the moon already plays a role in the Oceans etc ..can you fawkin imagine a world with no moon at night ???...and for how long ???

society would cave in on its self ...I am telling you that this will be far more drastic than
looking for space dust .

I see this as a big problem

come on people wake up ...I showed this story to my kids last night and they got the picture ....

Exploring and exploding are two very different things. We currently are on track to start exploring the moon again and hopefully on to Mars.

you don't reckon that a bunch of rocket scientists sitting around a table at NASA didn't use some deductive reasoning to determine that this method of exploring was the best one suited to figuring out what is hiding down there? Some redneck just got up one morning, went to work in Florida and said "hey bubba, what we gonna do is, shoot us a rocket at that there moon and see what the heck happens!" "Sounds good Jed!" That was last Wednesday, right?

And to think they are going to do this right as hunting season opens up. Great now the deer, elk, and antelope are going to be all messed up for rut!
