Denver Access to Good Riding

What's life like for a sledder living near Denver?

Travel time to spots
Access to spots
How difficult is it to find spots where not everyone goes
How busy are the roads getting out on the weekends
etc.

Just looking for some insight. Thanks!

Lots of riding within 1.5-3 hours. Nothing that close though except the worst place I've road. Weekend traffic on I-70 is brutal unless you get up super early.

Grand County has a lot of good riding and gets you off 70 sooner. All and all not a bad place to live if you don't mind driving to the snow.

Good luck and welcome to Colorado.

Subscribed for more info as well! I just moved down here to Highlands Ranch and have been looking for people to ride with and split fuel. I will have a deck this winter and could tow a 2 place if we got a group going.

DO YOUR SNOW DANCES!!

I live just on the south side of Denver and love it here. Getting to snow is never an issue. Leave early and come back late to miss the ski traffic. I usually end up staying at a cheap hotel and riding the next day when the snow is good. Rabbit Ears is only about 2.5 hrs away if the roads are decent. The key is to be headed up i70 by 5:30 or so. I usually get outta town early then stop for gas, food, etc. once I am past silverthorne. I70 corridor can be a nightmare sometimes.

I am always looking for guys to ride with.

Denver is the best.

Be prepared to drive, period. You have to drive 3+ hours to get away from the crowds.

It may seem like a long drive when you hear it for the first time..."what, I have to drive 3 hours one way to go sledding".

BUT, once you're on the road with 3-4 other guys talking sledding, giving each other $hit, and jonesing to ride it goes by really, really quick!!!!

Anticipation of fresh powder will also make it very easy to roll out of bed at 4:00am:face-icon-small-win

We leave town by 5:00am which means I am up at 3:45am in order to get to the meeting spot by 5:00am...it makes for a LONG day but it's so worth it!!!

This thread is hilarious to me because I'm used to driving 10hrs plus to ride...driving 3hrs will be like walking across the street for a beer.

Not spending $600 on fuel will also be nice

The drive up in a packed full pickup with 3 good friends, some fresh breakfast burritos, and the recent snowfall report of all the fresh snow is awesome! I agree on that one.

For some crazy reason, waking up at 4 to go ride snowmobiles is wayyyyy easily then waking up at 4 to go work!

Man I was spoiled in Montrose last winter. I could leave afternoon and still get a good day in without dealing with all the traffic. With that said I'll deal with the Denver drive, because we all know this **** is worth it!

I did move Mark. The job I had in Montrose with the State was just seasonal. They offered for me to return, but I found something that is rather promising to become a permanent position over here. It's still tempting to move back for the winter, but insurance would be nice! My eyes are always open for something to get me back to the west slope so you never know!

Werd. If I can work 14+ hours a day I can for damn sure go have fun for that long lol.

OK now you guys got me laughing thinking of my journey back home from RE at about hour 14 of a looong day.... When low and behold the state patrol stopped me for speeding...(like 9 over, if I remember correctly:) and upon approaching my vehicle saw the one empty crushed beer can in the back on my truck... great.....This led to a long wait for a 2nd squad car.....getting worse... The 2nd squad shows up and contained a shiney new state-patrolwoman who was young, blonde, hot...oh yeah and needed some on the job training doing a roadside field sobriety test.
So I explained I had one beer at least an hour before the stop after riding with some buds all day long... Commence the field sobriety tests...
I can't stop laughing after pretty much failing the stand on one leg, tip your head back, close ur eyes and touch ur nose with your left hand oh wait no your right hand...(BTW-that **** is way-hard to do after boondocking most of the day) Next is the one foot in front of the other while counting out loud 12 steps forward... At about step 10 my buddy drives by honking the horn recognizing my truck, thereby cracking me up again when the beauty queen asks me if I know those guys... I lose count...
At this point I am thinking, this may not be going so well. Then comes the ole follow my finger while trying not to look this girl in her eyes... "No follow my finger with your eyes" Yeah I'm thinking I heard ya the first time, but you are hot and I can't stop looking into those dang eyes...
Ahh anyway long enough rambling here, the entire stop ends with myself and 3 state troopers laughing aloud at each other, and finally my license and info returned to me and a big thank you for helping us train the newby and have a lovely evening...
That one ended up being a 16 hour day:face-icon-small-ton

Haha, nope that story is a tragedy... The lead officer gave me a card when he returned my license with HIS name of it... which went straight into the gas station garbage can. It was a funny deal, but that was definitely the longest trip home:face-icon-small-ton

I just happen to know where there is a lodge for sale on the west slope!

These responses are goofy. You don't need to travel 3 hours or get up at four in the morning to ride if you're in Denver. Just don't expect any motorsports mechanics in the area to know anything about snowmobiles. You have to figure that sh** out on your own.

You guys suck.:face-icon-small-win
For us. In good weather.
Cooke City. 17 hours.
Hahn's Peak. 21 hours
Togwotee WY. 22 hours
We went to to Hahn's Peak Road House north of Steamboat Springs, and Rabbit Ears the first week of April. Awesome riding. :face-icon-small-coo
Anyway from my perspective? You have a lot of options.
Hahn's Peak, Rabbit Ears, Colorado.
Cooke City, Montana.
Togwotee, Wyoming.
West Yellowstone, Montana.
Island Park, Idaho
Snowy Range Wyoming.
Alpine, Wyoming.
I know I missed a lot of areas but these are the places I know about. :face-icon-small-dis
