Just heard that someone was killed today in Daisy, don't know any other details. Also, The local search and rescue has told everyone to stay off the mountain until the snow settles down, saying that slopes are sliding that they've never seen before.

Its been puking here from the sky since yesterday, our group had an awesome day today in the trees of Round lake, staying close to the trail. easily 2-3ft of deep wet snow.

If anyone has more details, please tell.

That is sobering. From the picture I can't even see how you could see the danger there? Hopefully will get more info / pics on this one and see the terrain back behind those trees. Terrible. Very sad to hear this.

Pics are deceiving...they never show the true steepness of the hill. Not that it's obvious, but there is a chute running up the hill, that most likely connects to a much steeper zone that was remotely triggered by the sledders.

Avy danger is HIGH...locals are saying stuff is sliding they've never seen slide. Hopefully, this death wont be in vain, and other will open their eyes and get educated.

Ride safe.

R.I.P.

What a horrible deal..... It really has me considering what I think is a safe hill. I realize that pics dont always show it like it is- but that's crazy. It didn't even take out the little trees.

This year I've given up night riding,, I love to do it but if there was a slide at night......

That pic shows a lot of hill above the slide area and none of it looks open enough to slide. A massive slide didn't come through those trees either. It looks like it just slid right at the bottom. I would have been looking for an area like that to ride on a high avy danger day. Maybe there is some kind of terrain trap below the bottom of that pic that got them. Sucks. I think they were from Washington too.

Maybe what we can take away from this is that avalanches don't care what the slope looks like...if the conditions are right, the hill will slide.

We can't look at a pic and determine whether or not it's a dangerous slope. Watch the film "A Dozen More Turns"...very similar treed slope.

Trees don't stop an avalanche...they are consequence magnifiers!!

Heres info from the Bozeman Paper. http://www.bozemandailychronicle.com/news/article_0964c5ba-5de5-11e1-a7fd-001871e3ce6c.html

A snowmobiler was killed Wednesday outside of Cooke City, according to the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center.

The snowmobiler was in a meadow area when he triggered an avalanche directly off Miller Road on the way to Daisy Pass, the Avalanche Center reported on its Web site.

The rider was dug up quickly, but he did not survive. Another rider was partially buried, but was not injured. Both their snowmobiles and a third machine were completely buried in the slide.

Avalanche forecasters plan to investigate the scene today. No other details were available as of press time.

Also on Wednesday, the Avalanche Center issued a backcountry avalanche warning for the Bridger Mountains.

Heavy snowfall, high winds and extremely weak snowpack are causing unstable conditions, according to the Avalanche Center.

Avalanche danger is high on all slopes, according to the Avalanche Center, and natural or human-triggered avalanches are likely.

The warning will be updated today.

Just to clarify the rider was from Gravelbourg,Saskatchewan not Washington. He was riding with a bunch of my friends. Haven't heard first hand details yet but sure doesn't seem like they should have been in danger after looking at the picture. Guess you never know. Hope everyone with him have a safe trip home and take care guys we are thinking about you up here. RIP Norm.

That is nuts

No way i would have thought that. I guess you just never know.

If you could only see what is above what you can see. It would be more evident why it slid. There have been other burials in that area

Very very sad. Looking at the pictures, I would have ridden that area and not been too concerned. Like locals stated, slides have happened they have never seen before.

God Bless all those involved.

Sam
