We have lost at least 12 people to avalanches this past weekend. We have lost another 4 this past week in the U.S. and Canada. We went to considerable rating around christmas in most areas of the west and many followed with ratings of high. Some areas may hit extreme before this weather cycle ends. It could take a week before this snow consolodates to safer levels and some areas may retain that week layer all season.
