D8 Cylinder Porting

So I'm going to pull the trigger and buy a holdover 2009 800 Dragon. The dealer has to do the update to the pistons and tear down the motor. While there is time & the motor is torn down, why not send off the cylinders and have them ported? The dealer picks up the labor.
Is RK Tek or MPM the best for porting? Thx new to the forms.
 
Just let a PRO. do the job.
The nicasil flakes very easy on those monoblocks.
I port my cyls.than replate em to be shure it works.

If your talking morehouse performance, Brian is still recovering from back surgery and won't be porting until Jan. I have an 09 D8 and have added a few goodies, I will be having morehouse do a port for me when he is able. According to Jim, he is one of the best at porting and uses a technique called port timing which is more accurate then sending your stuff off to have it ported as each engine has a little bit different valve timing, etc.
 
Porting flat works...if done right. Kills your sled's performance if not. Do not risk something you cannot go back on. The 100% known absolute and undeniable experts on porting this application is Carl's Cycle Sales in Boise Idaho. 208-853-5550 ask only for Chris Kosel the performance manager. If he is busy, out, or on the phone leave a message and he will get back to you. NO BS..this is the only way you should proceed with this particular application. This is not a "I ride this so you should too" or "mine is the best because this is what I have" or "my buddies sled rips so do this and this is who he went with" situation.

The D8 cylinder suffers from many things.. It is a very hard cylinder get gain power from.. This is why the big bore kits use completely different cylinders.. because if they used the stock cylinder it would not make great power..

There are some minimal gains to be had with a proper port on the D8.. but I feel the gains are not worth the expense..
Also, to reap the rewards of the new porting, you will also need a different pipe and head.... So, the cost goes way up and the gains are not that substantial..

IMO, with pipe, head and porting on an 08 or 09 D8 the most you can gain is about 10-14HP.. This is the max.. So, IMO, this is not a lot of power for the money spent..

We never released our 2008 D8 head because the OEM head was very good.. and there was only about 3-4HP to be had.. (not enough for an RK Tek head to be released to the public)

NOW, the 2010 head is TERRIBLE so, we may have to look into getting our D8 head back on the production line..

I will agree 100% with F-bomb. I ran the porting from Carls last year on my 09, and that is exactly what i am going to do to my 2010. I rode both my 08 and 09 with just a single pipe before deciding to port the 09. BIG difference. Their porting flat out rips. You won't be dissapointed.

RKT, just out of curiosity, why is the new head so bad?
 
Carl's is the only place with the only people that have proven time and time agian there quality and performance. Don't short yourself!!!!
 
Porting

No one has mentioned that porting your new motor may void the warranty. You might want to check that. I am only doing a pipe until mine goes out of warranty.
 
I checked with my local dealer regarding the warranty issue, and it does void the warranty
 
just some food for thought, a head change on any of the iq sleds is beneficial, even the 08-09 and especially the 010 head. changing the dome style is used to make better throttle response and/or torque. contrary to popular belief you do not make hp by adding compression, compression makes more torque on the bottom end, and a small amount of hp is made as a secondary gain
 
So what are you recommending on a head change. A reconfigured head by carls or a new style SLP or?

you can cut the stock head but it will cost about as much as a after market head. with an after market head you get the ability to change a dome if it gets damaged or if you want to add compression if you go way up in elevation or go to a turbo. I personal like to quality and dome design of the power addiction and the fastrax heads. something to consider also is to get your set up from a local shop the rides at your elevation, air density and snow type so you get optimal performance out of your machine.

Did you do just do cylinder porting or did you do case and cylinder? I
just got mine back from Carl's Cycle for the 2010 update and I had them cylinder port and shave the head and I am running a SLP single. Anxious to see how it runs.

tried to find the performance section on their website but all i could find is BB kits. iv got a 09 dragon 800 with twin cpi pipes what to do head mod iv herd about here, and also porting down the road, does chris setup only work with slp products???
