d8 860 ecu melted????

My bro and I rode red medow last week and as we came up on the lake his ecu melted. Were not sure why? One of the dealers said they have had a few go down but carels cycle said they hadn't seen this before. So were are a little hesitant on just bolting a new one in so we dont melt it. Does the d8 have a regulator that might have over charged ? Or could the stator have had a short to do this? It rained the whole drive up and till about the 10 mile marker on the trail could the rain have helped melt it down? thanks

Normally that is what happens when the voltage regulator goes out, it supplies to much voltage and melts the back side of the ecu. Did you notice the lights getting brighter or fickering before it quit? I definately would replace the voltage regulator when you put an ecu on it, or you will be doing it again.

That was the plan to change it out also. But could the stator be bad also? we didnt see the lights flicker but wernt looking eather . the back side was melted one of the little battery looking things had a brown goo coming out of it. I will try to get pics. any thing elese we might test to be safe

This was a common problem on all the d8's, it is wierd that carls cycle said they have not seen this. Maybe they misunderstood what you were describing because I bet over half of the 2008-2010 d8"s sold had a voltage regulator and ecu replaced. My 09 and my riding partners 09 both had to be towed out due to regulator and ecu failure.

Half way into the 2010 season Carl's told me they haven't heard of any top end issues with the D8. :face-icon-small-dis Take what they say with a grain of salt. They have to protect their brand.

Definitely check your voltage regulator before hooking up a new ECU.

at least the ol m7 was running that day lol we need to do some welding on his nice after market bummper now to kinda a spendy ride thanks for the info We need a payday soon to get back out there. But that sledin right

ecu failure

I don't know what a "d8" is, but my '08 800 recently had a melted ECU. We replaced the Voltage regulator ($70~), Capacitor ($140~), and ECU ($375~). It just randomly melted, the dealer told us that it happens a lot, and they recommend replacing all at once even if they aren't broke, to be sure not to burn up the ECU again. I hope I was somewhat helpful.

"D8" stands for Dragon 800. As in Dragon 800 RMK

It all depends on WHO you talk too at any place of business.

For anybody that replaces a VR or ECM or for that matter owns a CFI....make sure you add an additional ground strap from the chassis ground to the motor.

Where is the capacitor located on the sled? And how does the extra ground wire help? I havnt hear of those two parts. Man i realy appreciate all the info it realy help thanks
