Tip: If you are making it a smooth curve...Draw a smooth arc line ... you need something at least the diameter of a 55 gallon drum IMO or it looks too round.
Cut it with sheet metal snips (aka tin-snips) or a jig saw.
Get some $3.00 door edge guard for cars from K-mart or your local discount auto parts and stick that to the exposed edge.. Viola... a stock looking windshield!!
Pull the edging off and save it for when your finished. I used a dremel and a rotozip tip. Worked like a charm. I agree that getting to contour correct is the hardest part. Take your time and it will turn out fine. Good luck
I just took a sharpie and using a steady hand used the original curve of the windsheild and marked it out, then used snips to cut and then put the original molding back on
did mine last year, i didn't like any of the aftermarket ones. Definatly take it off to cut, but leave it on whille drawing your "arc" that way you can see if it is all good before cutting. I used my old rubber edging when done, just needed to use some glue to get it to stick. I used a flat black paint to finish the shield, it's only used to keep snow out of my intake.
When we cut down one, used a peice of paper to get the curve we wanted then cut with a grinder with a cutting blade and sanded a bit. Painted it with Krylon matte/satin black. Picked up some new edging from Lordco. Worked fabulous! Used the grinder for a bit of heat with the cutting to reduce the risk of cracking...that was the theory anyways Lots of effective ways to cut them.
However, I have a chrome windsheild and one thing I notice is any flex/rub/bend crimples the chrome, cuz it's just a finish on the back. Not sure if yours would be the same or if you're keeping it chrome, but I would be cautious of how you cut it and maybe score that first or it could peel/flake off. ??
Cut it today. it looks really good, i use the edging but instead of the black i used chrome and it look really good. i just made a patteren out of the cardboard and just traced the pattern from the windsheild that was factory.
I just marked it off with tape then used an air grinder then used a sander to get the right contour. Be sure to save the edging because you could glue it back on when your done
Used a band saw on mine. Went really well. It's a chrome windshield but it was brand new so it had the protective plastic on it when I did it. Was able to re-use the black trim too. Just glued it back on.
