cummins 12v vs. 24v

I have an '01 2500 Quad Cab 24v. The motor and tranny have been pretty good all around, but I don't have anything crazy done to it either, just Edge and 4" exhaust. My lift pump went out last winter, but it had about 230k on it also, so I couldn't really be too upset. Did cost about $1100, fyi. This is my first Cummins, and I can tell you I'd never buy anything other than a Cummins. I'm with everyone else, if you want to make all kinds of power and have the money to put into it, get a 12v, otherwise I'd get a 24v for something a little more street friendly, imo.

ive had to replace 3 lift pumps on my 02. 135 dollars for oem pumps from cummins.Iam guessing the dealer installed an in tank pump on yours?finally bucked up the money for a fass 150/150.15 psi at idle or full throttle.

i bought my 02 because i love the second gen styling and i wanted power at push of a button. The 98.5 to 02's have lift pump problems, so first thing to do is replace the stock lift pump for a fass or airdog(or anything of that nature). The major failure to the injection pump is lack of fuel pressure so make sure to put a fuel pressure gauge in to keep track of it.

Well from the point of view of a guy thats had both and works on them daily I can tell you some good and bad points of each.

the good for the 12v, fuel economy is better not much but it is, cheap to get power out of if you know what your doing, the inline pump almost never fails, start great in the cold, still have throttle linkage, and no electronic for the motor.

the good for the 24v, make great power stock, easy to mod with a chip, injectors will never fail, alittle quieter running, start great cold, can run at higher rpm, injection pumps last a long time if taken care of(I'll get back to this one) and it's a newer truck.

the bad 12v, must have the KDP fixed or it will fall out and take out the front gear case and the motor will have to come out, the tranny's in the early trucks suck, it's an older truck, still have lift pump problems, injectors do fail, not much power in stock form.

the bad 24v, lift pumps fail, when the lift pump fails it can cause the injection pump to fail, though I've never had seen problems with the computers it can happen, the app sensor is prone to failure ( big bucks) along with its wiring harness, the fuel economy is lower than the 12v, the 4 door isn't a crewcab.

now that said you can fix all the weak links on both truck before they cause the $$$$$ problems. I can tell anyone more details on the fixes and repairs if you PM me along with rough prices.

If it were me I'd go for the 24v.

hope this helps you out

wow this is an old post but thanks for the info. i ended up going with the 24v. found a killer deal on an 01 sport with 97k on it. tranny went out and had that replaced and had a billet tc and shift kit put in. put chip in and found out the lift pump was weak. replaced that with a fass ddrp. it ended up being too small and now i have a bigger pump. also got an intake and a 5in exh now. minus the tranny and pump she has been a great truck!

2006 dodge

I have a 2006 cummins duelly its on the rigs page on here with a 30foot gn trailer on it I love it I'm a little of 200,000 miles on it put a lift pump in at 180,000 and got the bug the guys where talking about and started puting money in it and Its got alot of grunt now but starting to eat the tranny but it pulls 30,000lbs in the summer all the time and we had 12v liked them tell we started runing 24v's now there is 3 in the family wont go back not for a daily driver I'm pushing over 500 horse and drive it like a car around town and then hook to my gn trailer and pull 30,000lbs like it's not there hard to do without being able to program it or some kind of electronics If I was to build a diesel drag truck or mudbogger then I would go 12v but for every thing else the new one have came a long wase and if your sweeting a tranfer pump on a diesel mybe you should look at a gasser not to be a prick my .02

Here's my 98 12v qc 5spd about 425 horse very good street manners and very reliable.

that could be true, and if so my bad. i've just heard people talk about them existing and figured that'd be the best combo.

They are probably conversions, a friend of mine converted his 12V 98 to a six speed and had done 2-3 others since.

I had a 92 12V and now a 2000 24V. The 12V's are simple, easy to maintain and get better mpg's stock. I think it is easier to make more power on the 24V through the electronics than with the 12V through the pump.

I have posted on this thread allready, but I do find in funny that a truck that has not been built in almost 12 years is still a hot topic! I guess my old 12v is still cool!!

You diesel guys are a dedicated bunch.....I'd light my truck on fire before I spent $1,100 on a fuel pump from a 1998 truck jesus H.

I've got a 99.5 24V with 283,000 miles, I have not had any problems with my injection pump! I've got over 150,000 miles on the VP44 with an Airdog 150 lift pump. The tranny on the other hand, been through 3 of them! go 5-6 speed if you can.

Just rolled 202000 last week and still on original vp44!!! Has an AD150, simple chip, intake exhaust and runs great. Tranny and rear diff slip, but im hard on things like that. Oil stays clean till about 2500miles, after an oil change also my oils actually clean, unlike most other diesels that come through the shop. But, if i could go back.. Id get a common rail

PS the VP44 trucks sound the best
