Creeping RPM's

Hey guys i've been chasing this problem for a while and need some new ideas. When I let go of the throttle the RPM's drop down to about 1900 where I like them. Then it slowly(about 10-15seconds) creeps up to about 3000. It stays there for a couple seconds and then drops to 1000 or lower and motor almost dies. Then the cycle starts again. If I blip the throttle when it's at 3000 it will drop back to normal idle and stay there for awhile before it starts creeping back up. What do you think is going on here. I have new reeds and have checked all the hoses. Could it be my pilot jets or possible my fuel screws being to lean. It does bog when I punch it off the line. Any ideas would help. thanks (2001 summit 800)

Yep, need to pull the carbs and clean them thoroughly.........sounds like the pilot circuit is the culprit. You say you have new reeds? Was the reed boots delaminated? Did this problem exist before the new reeds?

the last ride of the year my RPM's shot up to 4000 and I could not get them down. Later found a crack in the reed boot so I replaced them. I have had the "hanging RPM" problem for a while but it would always settled right down to normal and not a big deal. Now it cycles like I described. This was the first ride after the new reeds.

Have the carbs been cleaned lately? I would start there for sure if not.....and it does sound like the pilot circuit.

thanks guys, Fuel screws was my first thought. I'll tear into it tonight. Anyone know what size pilot jets work best. I've heard that guys change out the stock pilot jets but now sure why or to what size. Mine are box stock.
