Sparwood BC Lost 8 memorial decals are printed and available for min. $2 donations
Last December the Town of Sparwood B.C. and the snowmobiling world in general lost the lives of 8 loved ones in a single tragic avalanche last year December 28th, 2008 people rushed to help these families however they could around their homes ect. Money was also raised through many means to help these people in their worst of times. No one can comprehend what those families went through together but I could only imagine the pain and sorrow. This is what I did to help.
I was at a loss as to what I could do to make a difference, I didn't know any of these guys that were swept away at all, but just could not stop thinking it could have been anyone of my friends on any given day. It could be my wife alone now with everything in our lives on her shoulders on top of losing a loved one. This place where it happened near Fernie BC is less than an hour down the highway from me so it hits close to home for me.
So I designed these decals with a mouse freehand in a MS paint program for a start (looked pretty crude to say the least), but the idea was there and it looked good, ha ha. Now I needed a way to afford to start this off, I am just one guy after all and cant afford such things like this ya know. So I called SnoRiders magazine which to my amazement was in Cranbrook where I live. Keith, the editor was more than happy to help out and offered their graphics designer, Chris, to me to make it into a real decal/logo. Chris and I made these decals at their office here in Cranbrook BC into what they are today. And they look great by the way guys! Thanks so much.
So then SnoRiders offers to pay for the printing of the first 500 stickers for me for free to get it rolling, I was so happy. I put the word out everywhere to anyone who wanted to help sell them around the kootenay's. Lots of shops here hopped on board and from January to March I sold over 1500 of them!! The sticker went for minimum donations of $2 and over $3300+ was raised!
I hope all the families were taken care of financially and I am sure they were, but that little bit of money we all raised from the stickers is more than just a month or two of bills for one household, it is the fact that at least 1500 sledders out there are aware and thinking about the avy dangers when riding due in part to the loss of some of our sledding brothers.
I just hope that all those decals are in a place on a helmet or a hood where they can be seen so that whenever we all ride, WE REMEMBER.
This year there has been interest in getting them going again so Derek Kortschaga from "The Drive 102.9FM " and Maximum Impact Signs have teamed up to make the first batch of 500 to get it rolling again. A big thanks to them, also everyone selling the decals and those of you who buy them.
Mayor David Wilks of Sparwood and I spoke today, and we believe that there are programs out there that need funding like back country search and rescue programs ect, So this years money raised will be going to local search and rescue organizations and possible avalanche training brought in locally if enough money is raised. I still have to contact people on this subject so any feedback on this would be appreciated; these are after all the programs we as back country users rely on every time we go out if something goes wrong.
