Cracked primary

Well after getting stuck down in a bowl 3 days ago due to my VR and ECU failing on my 09 D8, it left me stranded again when my primary clutch sheared in half. The crack is the full circumference in between the sheaves. Has anybody experienced this? Luckily I am still under the one year factory warranty and I purchased the three year extension so I sure hope it is covered... I am pretty frustrated.

If I am covered under warranty, is it worth making the argument that the failed primary smoked my belts? Should I also make argue that the unbalanced mass on the end of my crank has most likely caused some damage?

On a positive note, after getting my new ECU and VR my sled ran amazing. I hit 8450 RPM today which is a huge improvement over the 8050 that it barely maintained after this up date.

I will try to take some pics to show how the primary cracked. Thanks guys,
Brandon

Are you supposed to be running at 8450? I thought it's supposed to be 8200

mine did the same thing but broke clear off ruined hood clutch cover etc. warranty issue had to cut inner sheave off with cutoff wheel bein really!!! careful of crank but workin good now i put 500+ miles on since new clutch

mines got 2700 miles on it turning higher then 8200....but you are right for warranty its 8200.....

Thanks for the heads up on that AKSNOW. I have not done any clutching other than replacing the primary spring like Ron has recommended so anything that was done to make it turn faster has been done by my dealer. Next time they ask its 8200:)

The only other thing that I have done before the 8050 max and the 8450 max was put my stock can back on in place of the SLP.

Mr. Decker...How many miles did you have when it broke? Did they help you out with a belt at all? Thanks.

Wow that is strange. Reminds me of what we had to do on my buddies sled to get his comet clutch off. Wouldn't come off for nothing, even with heat, so sawed it off by the spacer where yours broke, took a grinder with a cutting wheel to the back sheave, broke it off in three pieces, then pulled the spacer off the crank with a regular bearing puller. I hope for your sake it's a warranty job, but if not that's one way to get it off.

Well I just got the call from the service manager at my dealer.

I talked to him this morning and he expected to get the O.K. to go ahead and pull my clutch apart and replace everything within a few hours. Turns out Polaris wanted a bunch of photos of my machine mainly the belly pan, A-Arms and engine compartment, which is understandable.

My service guy said normally after he sends the photos they get right back to him, but not so much the case. The warranty guy at polaris kept asking for different views. The hood, the tunnel, bumpers top and bottom of hood ect.

They also asked my service guy why HE thinks it failed. So he sends more photos and replies that he thinks my primary failed because it was a bad part/casting.

In the last reply he received from Polaris, they ignored the clutch problem all together and stated the they think I had an SLP pipe in one picture and not another. That my primary had a small amount of surface galling on the aluminum and that the foil under my hood does not appear to be stock. As of right now they are not going to warranty my clutch because of those reasons.

I have never owned an SLP pipe, I even put my stock can back on because I think it runs better, no my primary was not polished to a high gloss finish and yeah I tore all of the foam from under my hood and replaced it with HVAC tape.

If it is not warrantied I already have a 2010 Summit XP 154" lined up to buy and I am jumping off of polaris after owning only one of their machines. What a bummer.

Sorry for the long post guys. I just thought I would let people know that pulling the foam out might screw with the warranty process, even though it is a total crock.

sucky

Dude, that sucks.
Loving Polaris's doesn't mean you have to be stupid does it? I too have had warranty issues with them. I will never buy another new Polaris again and I have bought two new ones in the last three years. Years ago they seemed to be good guys, but not anymore. I wonder if they will screw Burandt around like this.

:(

Just got a call from my service manager, Polaris is going to warranty the clutch and sounds like one of my two belts that got smoked. They asked my service guy what how he felt about the crank that was in it and he told them that there was a small amount of damage secondary to how they had to remove the inner sheave so polaris was totally fine with putting a new crank assembly in! The only downside is both parts are back-ordered until the 25th of this month.

The service manager is also trying to get polaris to tell him exactly what the changes are to the new flash, I will update you guys with what I hear from him this afternoon.

Hey trikerider, I PMed you. I still think I am going to get a 2010 Summit from Webb's next week becuase I wont have the dragon back till mid february. Do you know anyone that wants to buy a Dragon?:D

Have you been riding reecer lately?

08 600HO had a primary at 300 miles on it that started binding up. would only happen when cold..shop couldnt duplicate it...after three trips to the shop they fingered out that the primary was not machined right and would bind. Different primary than yours but could have been the same machinist.

Hope you get it fixed soon.

Well, on the bright side, at least the snow right now totally sucks, so you won't be missing out on much... at least if its anything like the snow we've been riding out of Yakima.

I'm also curious as to who the dealer is... At least in the end it has been warrantied as it should be.:beer;

I pmed you back I'm sorry I don't know anyone that's in the market for a Dragon. I road Dawson, Swift, Naneum and Coleman last week. Was able to ride most of the day off trail even though the snow isn't the greatest. For some reason there seemed to be more snow in the bottom of the Naneum than in the higher areas. Good luck

We've been riding Naneum, Wilson and Coleman mostly. Ive probably passed you somewhere along the way. Well Im going to make some calls myself to try to track down a crank cause I dont want to wait til mid february for my sled back. If I get her fixed or get a Rev I will get ahold of you for sure. Im going to try to start riding every sunday with John from the boat shop.

FordGuy, I have been dealing with Paul at Owens. He is a super easy guy to work with and has been top notch helping me with all of my troubles. The snow hasnt been spectacular but if you stay in the trees and out of the wind, it sure beats staying at home and getting fat:beer;:beer;
