CR 500 smart carb

Been riding CR 500 snowbike for three years and am finally considering spending the money on a billet smart carb. Before I spend $675 I am looking for any advice, good or bad, from other CR 500 snowbike riders regarding running the billet smart carb (it appears that 38mm is best suited for the CR). I plan to also purchase an avid products carb heater, which sounds like the ticket, even though it hasn't gone through a full season to be tested. Appreciate any advice, just don't want to spend this kind of money and be disappointed.

I ran a Smarty last season. I started the season off on the 76 rod which was mistake. Should of left the rod stock at 80. Im at 60-70 clicks. There was a lean spot at 3/4 throttle on hard load. I use fuel builder to raise the octane and that takes care of that issue. Race fuel would work as well.

The Smarty was always a pain to start cold. It really needs a way bigger choke circuit for the 500. A friend of mine claims he could start his one kick, which i could not really do. The 500 needs piles of fuel to start. A primer may be the ticket. Always pull the choke before turning the fuel on lol. Once the 500 is warm it starts first kick every time.

At WOT it pulls as much fuel as your motor wants. Was always spot on and for the most part idle to WOT other than the lean deto if no fuel builder or race was used. The idle seems to be pretty good although mine would stumble and die here and there, although i did find a chunk of metal in my reeds from a filter setup i made, lucky it didnt get past the reed. This may be part of my idle issue.

I am trying a Pulse setup to start this season off. Ive heard nothing but good about it starts, idle, vibration etc. I do notice the metering rod carb does vibrate quite a bit. The Smarty is a good choice for those who dont want to play with jets. Just set and forget. I think with a primer it will make it that much better !

Thanks summitboy! What is the pulse setup?
Also wondering if your 500 is on a stock bore or bigger? Mine is at 90.5mm (or 0.06") over. Have you been running 40:1. Since I am bored over, I would probably have to setup the smart carb a little richer than a stock setting. Any thoughts on why the detonation at 3/4 throttle wide open? Did any others experience this. I guess race gas seems to solve that.

In the end, did you feel that the smarty was as advertised....more power, and peace of mind that you wouldn't under jet, run lean, and burn down?
Overall, I am mainly considering it for peace of mind, that I can run any elevation, any temp, etc... and not worry about running too lean and burning down my bike in the bottom of some hole.

There is no stock setting. Every motor is different. Just tune for perfection. The carb will feed it whatever it requires. The bore wont matter. Easy

It does what is advertised i would say. Whether it makes more
power that is for a dyno to tell you. It will be jetted spot on at WOT which is what matters to me. Clean running. The 500 needs a lot of fuel to start cold. Once warm it will start first kick.

U can search Pulse on SW or on CR500 riders for info on it.
