Cooke City MT Elevation

Hey all,

I am heading out to Cooke City the first week in January. I read online that the elevation is 7500 feet? But I could not find much about elevation changes in the riding area.

Riding a 2008 KTM 530 with 2016 LT.

Should I just jet for 6000-9000 feet?

Thanks.

Bike has a fresh bottom and top end, rekluse exp 3.0, KTM exhaust mod, and a JD Jet Kit.

Thanks for opinions.

Town is like 7500-7800, but you ride straight up and out of town to get to the riding area. Most of your time is going to be spent at 9-10,000 ft. Eric

Thanks, this is exactly what I was hoping to learn!

Yooper,
Not sure if it will help, but here is how JD recommended I set up my 2004 ktm 525 with 39mm Keihin FCR carb...
I ride 7000 to 10000 and it seems right on, though I have been meaning to rent a sensor to confirm. Glad i called jd for recommendations as it was richer than what i would have done. Note that when using their needles, you have to ignore all non-jd jetting charts for elevation and temps because the needles are vastly different so

39mm Keihin FCR
Pilot 42
Main 175
Blue needle / 4
Thick oring
No diaphragm spacer

Per jd, to further tune:
Sputter rich - move clip to 3 which will lean
Bog lean - move clip to 5 which will richen

Curious jow you end up setting up yours and how it runs so please follow up with an update.

Thanks, I have the instructions for mine and have found them to be just a little rich so now I just use the red needle and play with the clip position.

I'm from Marquette, MI. I'd pick you up on the way but I'm already the 8th guy on a 7 man trip.

If you can find your way out I would happily go riding though!

Jetting the bike tonight. JD jetting instructions for 6 to 9 thousand feet for my bike (2008 530)

170 Main
Red Needle in 4th clip from the top
42 pilot (if canisterectomy performed)

Was thinking I will do red needle in the 5th clip from the top and see how it runs.

Interesting that you run the 175 main at elevation, that is the main I run from 0 to 3000 feet in mine.

It's probably time for me to revisit the jetting as it sounds like JD has significantly changed there recommendations for 500 cc ktm 4 strokes. It has just always ran well so I haven't messed with it. What I'm using is what they recommended for snow bike setting for my 525 back a few years ago.

Are the jetting recommendation, that you mention above, from the instructions they include for dirt bikes at elevation or did you call and talk to them about jetting for a snowbike at elevation? Cold air is much more dense so one can expect to run jetting closer to a summer/low elevation jetting when in cold winter air at high elevation. So curious if the JD recommendation you mention is for 0 to 20 degrees air temps at high elevation or is for warmer temps at elevation? If you run the high elevation summer jetting (60 - 80 degree ambient temp), you will be likely be too lean at 0 - 20 degrees air temp), so just thought I'd check before you get too far into it.

Difference could be carbs as well. Which carb and size is on your 530?

The specs I listed are from the instructions for the 2008 530. Last winter I emailed them about jetting for elevation and they said just raise the needle for winter temps.

That said, I went with the blue needle 4th clip from the top and the 170 main with 42 pilot and fuel screw at 1 1/8.

Thanks for the clarification, yooper. I emailed JD regarding the jetting/needle suggestions they gave me a few years ago and asked for their current wisdom for my specific bike. Will be interesting to refine where I'm at now.

They might give me the "if it's not broken, why do you want to mess with hit" line, but it is tantalizing to potentially refine my setup even further if possible so will be interesting to hear from them, too, prior to some new experiments on my part.

Wish i had a bung welded into the exhaust so I could just borrow or rent a sensor to get the definitive verdict on where I'm running at various loads, rpms, and throttle openings.

During my week in Cooke I periodically checked altitude with my GPS, only got over 9000 ft a handful of times. For my riding I would say setting up for 6 to 9 k was spot on. I did end up changing my needle from blue clip 4 to clip 5. The bike ran fine but my plug was a little white at 3/4 throttle.

All said and done, I followed the jd instructions and they were perfect.

If anyone needs instructions for 08-11 ktm 450 or 530 bikes let me know and I will scan them to you.

Thanks for the followup! Too many threads are left hanging with no feedback, from the original poster, once they get more info, make a decision, or resolve an issue; info that could benefit those following the thread or that stumble upon it later. Thank you!
