Common core teaching methods.........

You can't blame Obama for this one. If you hate the Standards you will have to blame your local teachers as they are the ones that worked tirelessly to develop a set of standards that they felt all students should master as they advanced through the levels of education.

LOL!! read it again~~ no where does it say i blame Obama~~ it says~~ the obama care of education~ thats a comparison~~ this is to education what obama care is to health care~

Again I say, blame your local teachers, they are the ones that put the standards together. If you don't believe the teachers have a bit of insight into what our kids need to compete in the 21 century we have a bigger problem than a set of standards.

Actually, if I understand correctly, the local teachers are bound by nationwide standards, not what they feel is best for each individual student.

"No child left behind" & "Zero tolerance" are a couple other examples of nationwide programs that also harmed our educational system.

The local teachers are who wrote the standards. Teachers from all across the country spend 2 years putting these standards together. The driving force for most was the didn't like "No child left behind" & "Zero tolerance". These teachers donated much of there time because there were passinate about this project.

well i know i still have kids in school here in S.E. Idaho~ and the education has went down the toilet from what it used to be~ the schools are alot more focused on the head count for tax dollars than being focused on education~ what is put out to the public is alot different from what is actually happening inside~ and there are several schools here that are just putting teachers in classes that they have absolutely no clue what is going on or how to teach it~

seems things go along pretty good until jr high and then high school goes to the dogs~ if a kid needs some extra help~ it isn't gonna happen~

I am by no means as knowledgeable about this as a few of you other guys, so entering further into the debate would be foolhardy on my part.
In fact, I can see the rationale in having uniform benchmarks.

That being said, what angered me enough to start this thread was the many examples of trying to re-invent the wheel regarding to math.
F#ck 'til Friday, 212 - 36 = 176 & we do not need a confusing nonsensicle NEW WAY to figure it out.
That was basically the root of my rant.

We didn't "need" a better way than roman numerals either. I'm not saying the new way is better, I don't know if it is. But in my opinion, the way I've seen the problems presented, the method will be useful for doing large numbers in your head. Heck, it's basically the way I do it myself, only I wasn't taught it.

A lot of what you're seeing on the web has no context, and if you think the teachers are just going to toss it to their students and not explain it, you have a really low opinion of teachers.

Don't buy into the fear mongering, it's likely neither as good, nor as bad as anything you're seeing.

NCLB was a federally instituted mandate and it was more difficult for rural districts and rural states to comply and make AYP than urban or metropolitan areas.

They way I understand it, the states have the option of adopting Common Core if they wish. They don't have to.
