Coming to Alpine (my 3rd year in a row)

Hey Guys and Gals,
I've had the priviledge of visiting Alpine for the last 3 years in a row, and will be there the week of the 26th for 4 days.
I have to say that the first time I visited I was quite dissapointed, as we rode out of (is it greys river or creek) and weren't really able to find much of the big bowls. I was told there are some big ones if you take the cutoff road and then off to the right at the first hairpin, but got into some really steep chutes that we weren't able to climb out of.
Last year we were directed into gods country (down south, strawberry) Which is much like the area that I ride here at home.
Sooo,
Can I get some tips on other riding areas?? I've been to Togwotee twice and not gonna do that drive this year, but there has to be some stuff up toward Jackson, or toward Driggs?????
What about Afton????? and where would I go????

If anybody is intersted in riding for the day let me know. I've got some VERRRRY GOOOD wine and I'd part with a bottle if thats your thing. I'm an AC dealer as-well and I can bring up a belt or some oil if thats your trigger.
Any suggestions are appriciated.
thanks
DK

I would like to know also

Our group is going to Alpine in mid Feb for a week, we go every year for the past 10 years. We ride up greys river and go past the turn off for Murphys lake about 4 miles and head east up the mtn, fun ride but I would like something a little more steep. I have heard there are sweet bowls that go on and on, never have found them. Can a local chim in and give us a clue, where the good stuff is?

Rob here at the Rockin M Ranch. The entire Salt River range from Alpine to Afton is connected by bowls over 9500 feet it's just a matter finding the easier accesses to get to them. I'll be happy to help anyone, even more happy if your renting sleds or cabins from us. (rockinmranchwyoming.com) Most of the locals don't like to give their favorite spots up. Their are many drainages that lead to the big stuff including Sheep Creek, Indian Creek, Squaw Creek, Strawberry Creek, Willow Creek, Meadow Creek and the South End out of Afton. If your disappointed in Alpine your likely not finding the right areas. The one thing we have much more than Togwotee or any other area in Western Wyoming is the big bowls and chutes. A lot of the footage in Thunderstruck and Snowest/Klim adds are shot in our area. Give me a call and I would be happy to steer you in the right direction. I would rather not type out all directions on this site.

Maybe I can help.

After reading post again I may be able to help more.
dmkhnr. It sounds like you were very close to the bowls of Squaw. You may have taken the wrong canyon to the North. If you followed the logging road for a few miles and it dead ended at a bowl with a long chute to the left, you were at the right place. If you can't climb out of the chute there is another easier way down low in the trees to the left at the bottom of that bowl. There is a stair step of about five bowls above that first bowl plus many connecting to the South. Keep trying, most of those bowls have an alternate way of getting into them. Go on a sunny day if possible.
If you made it up strawberry you were also in a great area, but it is not possible to begin to see whats up there in a day. Last spring we rode accross 15-20 bowls to the South before turning around. We were almost even with Afton. You can also climb out of Strawberry to the East and ride all the bowls around Virginia peak behind the Box Y Lodge. Hope I helped. Been guiding hunting and snowmobiling in this area for over 15 years. Every year I find a new area that I haven't riden in years past. Thats why I love the Alpine area. Also awesome technical boondockin and tree ridin to the West in Idaho. You gotta have good riders or you won't make it too far too fast.

Thanks Rockinmranch

Thanks Rockinmranch, next year when our group comes up there I will make sure we call you to get prices on cabins, we have wives in the group that arent that aggressive and that is probably our biggest problem in not finding what i l like, This year we are at the Flyin saddle for a whole week in there cabins, which we got for $50 a night, they quoted us wrong and wanted $65 but they gave us the $50 because we have such a big group. We usually have around 20 people that come up from southern idaho.:beer;:beer;:)

Box Y on the Greys River

We have been going to the Box Y since 1997. Owners Tim and Cindy Haberberger are the best. That's why we go back. The Boy X is up the Greys River from Alpine, Wyoming about 29 miles. We always stay at least a couple of nights. We usually ride up in Blind Bull area. It is east of the Box Y. You turn off the Greys River road about a mile north of the Box Y and go up a groomed trail about 9 miles and your in Blind Bull. There is any kind of riding you want. The Box Y has a website. We are going in February. I can't wait!!!!!!!!!!! :D
