Clutch tuning

Ok...
I am interested in learning a bit about clutch tuning and I was hoping someone on here could give me a bit of direction.

I pulled the primary apart the other day and cleaned everything, also cleaned up the pins that connect the rollerarms since they were just a tad sticky.

I went riding and tried a whole bunch of clicker settings.
sled pulls GREAT at the bottom end on #3 and the motor seems to pull quite strong to 8100-8300 on setting #6. I ended up riding it on #4 and that seemed pretty good but it will top out at 7800rpm.

It would be really nice to have the low end of #3 but still be able to rev to 8000rpm. Is it possable to have the best of both worlds?

I read a post a while back where someone suggested adding weight till the sled will rev to 8000 on clicker #3.

What is the proper way to add weight???... will larger set screws do the trick or will i need more weight than that.

Please help me with a bit of direction :beer;:)

First of all what kind of sled is it? It sounds like you have adjustable pins, more weight will bring your rpm down, the lower the clicker number the harder the clutch will push together giving it less of a quick revving feel but a harder acceleration, more weight will do the same, if your pulling what you have now easily then add some more weight and adjust you clickers from there, but if you cant pull the weight u have easily on clicker 3 or 4 then take some weight out.

It is a 2005 Summit 151 800ho...
From what you are saying it sounds like my clutch is pretty well set up... I love the feel of the sled on clicker 3 but i could use some more revs... however, I wouldn't want any more revs than I have on clicker #6.
??? should I just put it on 4 or 5 and ride it ???

I am also interested in hearing some feedback on clutch kits. It sounds like there are a few reputable guys selling parts out there.
I would just buy a kit, but I would rather go through the learning process of tuning myself. I don't mind spending the time trying things and it is really a sweet feeling when you get it right !!!

On clicker 4-5 your rpms will be to low. Every clicker will drop about 200 rpms. If you want to ride on that setting you`ll have to drop some weight in the primary

I was always under the impession that every number you went up on the clicker you gained a couple hundred rpms, have I got it bass akwards?

Ok... how much weight can i drop and where?
I am assuming I should start with removing the set screws in my rollerpins (or installing shorter ones)...
I there a rule of thumb. remove XXXgrams/100rpm???

thanks for all the replys :)

What springs and helix does it have? What altitude?

He was on clicker 6 and was running 8100-8200 rpms so if he went to a clicker lower in number then the rpms should drop. You have it right but I think there was a misunderstanding about what clicker he was on and what the rpms were at.

On the 154X stock set screws are 12mm. I would buy a few diffent sizes and try them out. If you are clicker 6 and pulling 81-82 then you need to drop some weight...how much, I`m not sure. Drop enough so that you can ride on clicker 3-4 at 81-8200. Mine was over reving with just 12mm and I added another 12mm. So if you have to much rpms, add more weight. If you have too little rpms, then take some out. Also I change my primary spring to a 160/290 because the primary wouldn`t shift out all the way. Mark your clutches with a black felt marker before your next ride. When you stop, check to see if any black is left behind this will tell you what your clutches are doing too. With black on the primary you`ll need to go up in weight( this was my problem, I added another 12mm and that`s almost max so I had to change the spring).

PS: where are you testing? A flat field or lake; or are you in the mountains? And what is your sled?

well... I talked to DJ yesterday and I have his kit on the way...
I am pretty sure it comes with a new primary spring.
anyone know of a cheap small scale for the garage???

I believe if I were keeping the stock stuff I would need to drop 2+ grams to run clicker #3... BUT... no use tuning a set-up that I am not going to be riding on.

I'll set it on #4 or #5 for this weekend and start tuning when I get the spring and helix installed :)

thanks for all the replys... CHEERS!!!
