Clutch Gurus - Clutch alignment question

Just taking my clutches apart to get the sled ready for summer (it comes too early in Minn-no-snow-duh) and I noticed my belt was pitted with frayed cords on the outside (side away from the motor) of the belt. No marks or anything on the clutches. I believe this means that my secondary should be shimmed out (away from the engine) but I want to make sure I am correct. I only have one shim left in the secondary so if I need to go in any more I am SOL. Sled is an 05 M7 141, belt is the carlise XS817, secondary cut to 10.4", Shift assist, Goodwin Blue spring, cutler adjustable weights (68'ish g's), yellow/white primary spring. Sled pulls 7900 and holds it and pulls hard - no complaints. Thanks for the help, if any questions, let me know. Paul

they almost always pull outside cords regardless of alignment because that is where the movable sheeve contacts the belt on the primary (assuming that's where the slip is)...

i've found that if the secondary is slipping THEN the threads often pull on inside of the belt...

i hope this helps (and i may be totally wrong!). :D

PS - how many miles on the XS before threads popped?

I agree with what Mrquick said. I have always seen the cords coming out on the outside of the belt, even on the XPs I ride with. I don't think it matters which direction it is off.

I also think the belt issue has more to do with clutch setup, balancing the primary with the secondary, than it has to do with alignment to a point. I don't think if you are off .030" in your alignment that it will make or break your belt issue.

I don't know how you aligned your clutches but you should use the floating method, especially with your modified secondary, the alignment bar is now garbage.

I pulled about 3 inches of a cord on mine in the first 50 miles even with proper break in and now have 300 miles on that same belt with no issues. I also have the "homemade" 10.4.
