Clutch cleaning

What is the correct way (if there is ONE way) to clean a primary clutch? Can chemicals be used (lacquer thinner or brake cleaner) with a scotch brite on the sheaves and on the inside where the ramps and rollers are? Is soapy water and a dish towel better? Is there a problem with using a scotch brite on the inside of the sheaves to get the belt "skid marks" off?

No scotch brite on the sheaves!! It leaves the surface rough and those microscopic scratches will wear out/destroy your belt quicker than you can realize. As an industrial mechanic, I have seen plenty of V-belts explode because of this practice. Clean it as mentioned above, with hot, soapy water Inspect the sheave for deep grooves or wear, Grooves or excessive wear will do the same thing as scotch brighting your sheaves- It will eat your belt quicker.

Carb cleaner will get the belt crud off and I do a final wash with brake clean. Then a light lube with Tri-Flo for those moving parts >>>>.

Stay away from chemicals they soak into the aluminum and leach back out with heat, doing damage to your belt.
