cleaning up a few issues on ethanol plug, dialing in the track shocks and the skiis

i took some advice this weekend of a previous poster about tightening the front track shock as the sled needs it for a better pivot point. he was dead on! i have about 1 inch of threads showing now at the bottom of the shock. big difference. sled jumps from mogul to mogul but stays really flat in steep climbs. my rpms were at about 8050 so i went to non ethanol 91 premium and switched out the plug. now at 8300 rpm if i want it. another home run. 135 miles on now. only problem is i rode a pro with simmons skiis. OMG..much better. ordered some today. gen III's.turning, tracking, sidehilling, and handling chop without all the arm stress. will post after my 1st trip.

91 octane NON ETHANOL..big difference for my rpms. now perfect at 8200. before i was 8050. riding 1 to 2 feet of power from 8000 to 10,000 feet at horse creek just outside of pinedale, wy

plug

hey guys,
Quick thing here. I'm writing from up in Canada. Why is it that when I talk to the polaris dealers they all advise to run with the 10% ethanol plug installed????

I had mine in before, and the sled bogged down frequently from 8100 rpm to 6500... momentarily.

just took it out and put the non ethanol plug in, filled up with non ethanol fuel and it runs like a top now......

opinions???

Assaulter;

I dont know who your dealer is, but mine essentially told me to throw my Ethanol plug away - unless of course I'm headed State's side...

Shell has a 91 Octane - no ethanol...and then there is of course the Chevron 94 Octane - also with no Ethanol....Stay away from Husky and PetroCan

i'm guessing they said this because they want you to be safe, when in doubt they say run the ethanol plug, dealers probably say that so that's one less thing for them to worry about.

When you cranked up the front shock did you have to crank up the rear to keep the front end down?

yes on making the rear tighter!

i was at 10.375 to 10.5 inches on the lenght of the rear shock. now i am at 10.25 cheating to 10 inches. it doesnt take much tightening on the rear to compensate for the front. i dont know why the front needs tightening as some have said holz runs pretty much completely loose but it REALY helped mine!

Horse Creek

Where is Horse Creek? We ride Pinedale (from Minnesota) but do the Blind Bull/Merna/Grays River or Cora routine.

I did a Google but it located something north, midway between Laramie and Cheyenne.

blind bull is part of the horse creek ride

the warming hut that sits high on top of blind bull is a common destination that a lot of riders unloading at the horse creek parking lot go to for lunch. we are talking the same area. from the greys river you go towards alpine from the box y lodge and make a right up the groomed trail to the top of blind bull and you will find that warming hut.

Horse Creek

So Horse Creek drains into the Grays River? Or is it the river we ride along from Merna side parking lot as we head towards the warming hut?

I've wanted to go north from the warming hut. Is that the best area to go boondocking?

Or do you need to go north on the Grays River and then head back east towards the best areas?

Thx.

That is the only way it would work... By making the FTS stiffer you are taking away ski pressure!

The non-adjustable strap is short enough that you aren't going to change ski pressure much until you really crank down the front track shock. I had to go up to one inch of threads showing and I'm only 175!

Have FUN!

I've put my ethanol plug in 2x. Both times it was because I was running 87 octane gas (no 91 available on the river in AK) and my dealer said the ethanol plug would help make up for the lower octane rating by ritchening up the mix. Both times my machine got intermittently boggy and doggy on the top end. I'd be curizing along at 6-7k RPM and and punch it but the machine would sputter and bog. Sometimes it would clean up by feathering the throttle sometimes it wouldn't. Stopped and swapped the plug back to the non ethanol plug and the problem went away COMPLETELY. Not sure what the story is with the plug but my sled asked me to never put it in again.

funny, mine said the opposite, in fact when i asked for the corn plug in case 91 octane wasn't available and i had to run 87 the tech. told me they throw them all away...don't use it.( no ethanol in any of our fuel)
