Chevy or Dodge

Looking at buying a new 1/2 ton crew, not sure which one to get. Bought a new dodge in 97 and really liked it. Bought a new 2000 chevy crew and liked it. Both truck are gone so I am kind of looking at a replacement and can't decide. Right now both cost about the same. So what's your input?

08 Dodge SXT ext/crew 4.7L, 4speed auto, short box. Fairly well optioned.

08 Chevy W/T crew, short box, 4.8L, 4speed auto. Fairly well optioned but no cruise. No carpet which I think I will like.

These will be traveling trucks, very light hauling or towing. Have a 1T dually for towing / hauling. Looking for good mpgs, power for passing, comfort and handling and reliability.

Looking for people that have one or have shopped them or techs that have working on them. What you say?

Chev's rear seat has much more room than standard dodge.
The Chevs resale is stronger (around here anyway).

For what it's worth, I am not a Chevy lover, but in this case it'd be my choice.

Would you consider used?

The reason I ask is you can buy alot of truck for the money right now.
My buddy is GM salesman. PM me if you want his #, he can tell you what you could expect to pay etc.

if your buying it for a "truck" buy the dodge

if your buying it for a "car" with a box buy the chevy

I'm not knocking the chevy, it rides nicer than the dodge, but the dodge is more of a truck. I would go with the bigger motor in either of them though. Propably an $800 upgrade and roughly the same mpg

the 4.8 is no slouch and will get slightly better mpg than a dodge 4.7, nothing wrong with the dodges just i'm a real chevy guy, owned both but wont buy annother dodge again.

Yea I would say I am looking for a car with a box. A large car with plenty of passenger room although the dodge back seat would be adequate and a very large trunk (topper). I would use it to pull about 3000-4000 lbs (2 place sled trlr or 18' power boat) about 10-15% of the time. Most of the time would be empty and highway miles.
Right now both are selling at about $22-23k with incentives and there is one of each in town, both retail at about $31-34k. Sounds like the chevy gets 1-3 mpg hwy better then the dodge.
I don't think there is much in the way of incentives on the 09's yet. I am not interested in spending 30k for a truck either. I would be interested in a very low mile used one if the price was in line with the current market.
Really don't want to feed a 5.7 dodge or a 6.0 chevy, a 5.3 chevy would probably be fine. Like I mentioned above when I have serious towing or hauling to do I have a 1ton dually.

Both are very good points and I think I am leaning that way because of thoes points.
Anyone have any negatives on either, especially the drivetrain reliability or mpg's?

Thanks for the responses, keep them comming

x2 on that, the game wardens are runnin the 4.8 here in new pickups, he was the tellin me about them, haven't run one myself, my last dodge experience wasn't good either

Both the 4.8 chevy and the 4.7 dodge really have good numbers. Close to 300hp and around 330 ft lbs of tourque. Thats quite a bit more than the 2000 crew with the 5.7 I just sold and I thought it did ok with up to 4000 lbs load.

I work for a GM dealer so my opinions are probably a little pro Chev but I gotta tell ya..........we had a pretty big off site sale this weekend and took quite a few trades in. When I left the dealership to come home tonight, I grabbed a 2007 Dodge 1500 crew cab 4x4 that was traded in for a 2008 Silverado. It has quite a few options but what a bucket of bolts. No jam, crappy seats, horrible mileage and the guy lost his shirt on the trade. Keep the Dodge. I'll drive GM anyday.

I just bought an 08 Dodge 1/2 ton. The one I bought was the Big Horn Laramie, completely loaded with the 5.7 hemi. I paid 23,000 out the door, the sticker was 39,500. I looked a chevys but they couldn't compare on price, and if you're putting a lot of miles on the truck, Dodge has the lifetime power train warranty. Lithia Dodge in Great Falls just ran a special on the truck you're looking for, they had them marked 50% off and they sold for about 16K, I think they had 6 of them. Keep looking at all the dealers out there there are really good deals to be had. I've always had Fords and Chevy's and never considered a Dodge but the other dealers couldn't beat the price this time around.

if your lookin for mpgs id probably stay away from the dodge for some reason they have a hard time gettin decent mileage out of there gassers compared to chev or even ford. im not a big cummins fan either but id have to say if dodge didnt have that motor for there big trucks they wouldnt have any trucks worth even considering in my book. just my .02

I own both and I prefer the chevy over the dodge in the 1/2ton. Just my .02

Your just the guy I'm looking for, you own both. Why the preference with the chevy? Are 4.7 & 4.8 the motors you have. What are your dislikes on each? Please expound a little, should be great insight.

Didn't mention it earlier but I am talking 4x4, is it what they were selling at that price? I jumped on their web site, they still have a bunch of 08's. Didn't see the special your talking about but I will give them a call on Monday. If you see that sale on again PM me please. I am not sold one way or another but that kind of additional discounts might persuade me. That difference will buy a lot of fuel. Thanks

When I was workin at a dealership in Edmonton a few years back a salesman walked into the shop with a piece of paper in his hand. Said he just got a fax from some dude that said he wanted a new 3/4 ton truck, diesel, regular cab, long box, fully loaded, cloth seats and a manual trans. Said right on the fax he didn't care if it was a ford chebby or dodge. Also clearly stated that the same fax was sent to every dealer within a reasonable distance of his house. Whoever came up with the best deal would be getting a sale at the end of the week. This dude was gettin low ball pricing, free oil changes, free schwag, and the red carpet treatment from every dealer in town. I can tell you if I am ever in the market for a new truck that is the exact formula I'll be using. Mite be worth a shot for u too.
