Chevy 2500?

what i have heard if it is a 6.o gasser milage is no good along with the power.

I have a 03 HD with the 6.0 gas and the 4.10 rear end. I live in MN which is mostly flat and tow anywhere from 5000-7000 pounds every day. It will get 16 MPG empty. It will get around 8 towing what I tow. It has plenty of power. It will pull my trailer loaded up a good sized hill at 85 mph with out a problem. It has 260,000 miles on it now. I have had some issues with it lately but that is too be expected with a truck with that many miles. The engine still runs strong and does not burn oil.

i have an 04 also but in 08 they changed the tranny and really sucks from what i hear.

I have a direct comparison so to speak.

I have a 2005 2500HD with the 8.1L motor, 3.73 gears XCSB ...

My work truck is a 2009 2500HD with 6.0L and 4.10's. XCSB as well.

The 8.1L gets 13-14 mpg unloaded, 9 mpg towing

The 6.0L gets 15-16 unloaded, 10 mpg towing.

Does the 6.0 tow as well as the 8.1? Nope.

Does the 6.0 tow 5-6,000-lb well enough that I don't wanna drop another $6,000 on a diesel? You bet your *** it does. Does it tow as well as the 8.1L? Nope. Do I wish GM still put the 8.1L in their 3/4 and 1-ton trucks? Yup, but for the most part that 6.0 does well enough that unless you're gonna be yanking 8,000-lb around all the time personally I don't think the extra $6,000+ that a diesel will cost you is worth it.

Thanks meat! I'm wondering how far do you push the pedal down on your work truck??
The dealer claims up towards 20 mph unloaded! I know, I know. That is why I'm asking.
Now I'm thinking of going back towards a 1500 with a 5.7 motor.
What do people know about the 1500? Same questions.

My beater f150 gets 14mpg as it is.

Thanks!!

I can help ya there too at least roughly ;)

My work truck isn't even broken in yet, so I should have made that point in the previous point, I've only got about 1700 miles on it right now. I assume it will get a little better as it gets more broken in, but those are the numbers I have generated in the month I've had it.

As far as the 5.3L is concerned.

The truck I had previous to my 2005 8.1L was a 2000 5.3L ...

The 5.3L got anywhere from 16-19 on the highway, and 8-10 mpg towing ... AKA, the 5.3L got exactly the same miledge towing the same trailer my 8.1L did but it didnt even come close to towing it as well because it was wrapping up so hard.

The newer 6.0's that come with the 6 spd allison are a lot better about this than the 1/2 tons with the 4 speeds are, they have an extra gear (not counting the OD gear) to choose from essentially and if I am not mistaken all of the ratios are a lot closer ..... helps out a lot. but, if you get a 5.3 or a 6.0 on a long hill, you're still gonna be wrapping it 4800 RPM to keep 65 mph ...

it all depends on how much you tow. If I was only towing short distances I would be perfectly fine with a 1/2 ton. But I tend to take a lot of long trips and have an enclosed, so the 8.1L was perfect for me.

Back to your question however ... the newer 1/2 ton 5.3L and 6.0L motors have the displacement on demand, and DO get better miledge than their older counterparts.

My dad has a 2008 Vortec Max Silverado 1500, and it gets about 16-18 on the highway, he hasn't seen 20 with it yet I dont think but he also usually has his foot on the gas a little bit too. It tows his 27' Charmac enclosed well enough .... but, he doesn't tow that often.

Overall if I was buying a brand new truck today I wouldn't be unhappy about a 2500HD with the 6.0L .... that probably is the best balance between towing capacity and fuel economy for somone who doesn't need the capability of a diesel (it somone who lugs a lot around all the time)

hope this helps.

I don't know what everyone's opinions on the Ford V10 are (are they still even making that?), but that would be something I am going to look at sooner or later when I get another truck in a few years ... at least if the Environmental Gestapo hasn't outlawed vehicles with a GVWR of over 2,400-lbs by then

i had a friend with a 6.0 4x4 crew. he got 10mpg empty mostly highway. it doesnt get any flatter than it is here in florida.. hes a pretty conservative driver.. i dont 16 with my duramax..

he also had to replace his 6.0 at somewhere around 125k..

if he was getting 10 unloaded with the 6.0 he had something horribly wrong with it. was it under warranty? did he ever try to get it looked at?

the reason I ask is I traded my 5.3L off with 147k on the clock and that motor ran as good then as the day bought it and never burned a drop of oil on me ... Those motors (Gen III small blocks) have been damn near bulletproof as far as I have seen since they released them in 1998 or so.

I have an '01 2500 HD 6.0.
It gets 13-16 empty, depending on how fast I drive it.
Generally 8-10 towing my four place enclosed, but I drive pretty conservatively. The power could be better but it does a pretty good job. This summer I had my enclosed behind it with a rzr, 4 adult 4-wheelers, and a blaster in it at St Anthony, Ashton hill (outside Island Park ID) knocked me down to 50 mph, but it got the job done. I'd rather have a d-max but the price and miles were right and I haven't regreted it.

We have an 07 2500 with the 6.0 for a work truck

What a giant waste of money

Gets 9--10mpg empty, gutless, had to change all the shocks when it was new, won't start sometimes, won't shift ito OD, rattles like a blender full of rocks going down the road.

Other than that it's pretty nice

I guess I don't understand how or why you guys who have owned 6.0s that apparently were completley f*cked up from day one didn't get them fixed.

I have never seen one of these trucks act like that.

My boss has a 6.0 in a 04 1/2 ton and a friend of mine has a 6.0 with 4.10 gears in a 06 3/4 ton. They both like the trucks very well, but neither of them has ever got above 12 mpg with them to my knowledge.

I just bought a 2008 Chevy 1500 crew with the 5.3 and love it. Very comfortable to drive, good power, and good MPG so far. I only have 900 miles on it and am running regular 5-30(did the 500 mile oil change). With my heavy Nytro in the back I'm getting 16 mpg(hand calculated). I've been told they'll get over 20 on the HWY emtpy. My girlfriends dad has an 08 2500 with the 6.0 and his is a pig on gas and he drives very easy.

Does anyone know how long "break-in" is suppose to be on the 5.3? I've been told 5K miles...??? So far I've been gaining mileage with every fill-up.

I am now leaning towards the 1500. I don't tow heavy loads often so why deal with less mileage over time. Besides the tourque and hp is way way more than my beater f150 ever was and I get 14 highway and 10 towing.
