CHECK YOUR AIRBOX: MIGHT HAVE COME APART.

I was changing my fuel filter on an 07 Dragon and pulled the air box to get to everything and found that the bottom six inches of the box had come apart. The locking tabs had let go. There was a half inch gap on the seam. I took a paper towel and rub the inside of the throttle bodies and it came out black with belt dust. No telling how long it has been like that. I wonder how many other air boxes out there have the same problem. Might be wise to check yours!! I'm going to pull it back together with some 1/4" all thread nutted on both ends so It won't come apart again. The locking tabs are junk!!

mine was coming apart down the center vertically..black RTV. I heard that the 09's are a one piece construction.

My 2009 is not 1 piece. It came apart. I tried using JB weld to hold it shut, no luck. Ended up duck taping it shut. Kinda ghetto but no leaks.

Good post. Had to silicone and then black duct tape. Now no more underhood heat and dust getting into the throttle bodies.

Good Ideas with the tape and silicone and zip ties. The only problem is if the tape or silicone comes off it can't be seen on the back side like it is. I think I'll stay with the all thread idea. I'm going to drill a hole on each side of the box and run the all thread through it with large washers and lock nuts on each end. I think it will work. I'm heading out now to fix it . Will let you know how it comes out.

From the TECH TIPS thread under INCREASING YOUR IQ:

6) Place a small piece of duct tape over your headlight adjuster knob, prevents water, snow, and ice from being ingested into your engine.

7) Remove your air box and wipe down the seam area with lacquer thinner and duct tape the seam, prevents Kevlar dust particles from being ingested into your engine.

I did tape over the head light adjuster knob; but cleaning and taping would not have prevented the air box from coming apart. I think it was an assembly problem with the air boxes. The hooks do not have enough grab on them to keep the halves together. The way it is now, it will not come apart again!! The all thread idea worked quite well on the back side and I zip tied the front. I drilled holes down on the lower back side of the box. (the part that sits behind the jackshaft) about 1 1/4 inches up from the bottom. Then ran all thread through the holes, ( I used 1/4 inch but 3/16 would work) put a fender washer and lock nut and your good to go. Just be sure you do not leave very much thread sticking out of the nut on the oil bottle side as there is not much room there.

It won't prevent it from coming apart? That's weird, I duct taped mine about 500 miles ago and have had a completely sealed box ever since. I used to get all sorts of grime in the throttle bodies and now they're clean. Maybe your duct tape isn't as strong as the stuff I'm using?

Agree. I often wonder how many scuffed piston claims were the result of the airbox leaks allowing belt dust in the throttle bodies. Hate to say it but it looks like pods may be in the future. Yuck, warm intake air.

Too bad we couldn't come up with some pods that slip over thr t-bodies and fit into the airbox. :face-icon-small-hap
