Charging a BatteryLess System? What??

you gotta realize that when its cold out and the sled has been sitting, everything is going to be moving slow. here is my suggestion. pull your clutch cover or you side panel. rotate the primary one turn forward and one turn back about 6 times. this will believe it or not warm things up inside. you are going to be getting the oil warmed up and that inturn will let everything move a little easier.

think of it this way, when its that cold, does your truck turn over slower too? of course. i think that "precharging the efi" wouldn't help. yeah, you might have the fuel there right away, but its not going to make the internal parts move any easier. its probably a good thing that it doesn't fire right away. its hard to imagine, but every "clunk" that you get is generating a small amt of heat. i would like to think that if it did immediately fire, you would have a good chance of cold scoring the machine.

i don't claim to know it all, but damnit, i try.

cold start

Your fuel injectors need 12 volts to open. If your sled has been sitting for more than a day you have to pull it over 3 times. Each pull builds up 4 volts and on the third pull you have 12 volts and it will fire. Of course if it is really cold you don't have any momentum and you might have to pull a few more times. when your sled has been running the system holds a charge and that's why it will start on 1 pull warm. I think your idea of charging up the system before you try to start it makes sense but I wouldn't know how to do it.

What you are doing on the first pull when its cold is building fuel pressure and it starts the second. So if you want to precharge anything it would be your fuel pump. I like your thinkin . Hope this helps

I agree it's fuel pressure and charging with a battery would work, but it would still pull hard cold.
I remember being out at 40 below with my old PS EFI and it took 1/2 hour to get it to fire because it was so stiff.

Pulling over A/C

My Dad had this problem at 80 yrs. old.I told him to pull the plugs, crank it two times then re-install and pull over. This worked on his ZR600 EFI.It never failed to start on one pull after that.

Best of luck,

To Easy?

12v accessory plug by steering post? If I plug 12v into this accessory plug & turn on the key will the fuel pump run. I could try it on mine but I just had it running & I won't be able to see what happens. I could remove a fuel line & spray gas everywhere but I think I will let sit for a few days. Has anyone put 12v it through the accessory plug to see what happens. If this works that would be way to easy.

After running a sled out of fuel before I've used a 9V battery and two jumper wires to the fuel pump to get the fuel rail primed and pressurized.

One could wire in a battery to the fuel pump along with a momentary pushbutton switch. Simply hold the switch to pressurize the system.

A little 9V battery would be easy to mount, light and discrete. To get even more fancy use something like this gel battery which could be used as a backup power source for a cell phone, GPS charger, etc.

cold starts

I have the same thing on my m1k. took it to the shop not to long ago to have it mapped and the mech could'nt get it started. He pulled out a 9 volt radio battery out of his pocket with a connector that plugged in somewhere near the injectors for just a second or two and blamo it fired right off! He said it pressurizes the fuel rack. I need to call him back and find out what it is that he did? Anybody else ever hear of this techno trick before?
