Changing valve cover gasket

I was replacing my charge tube (the rubber part), from the heat exchanger to the intercooler and noticed that one of the half moons on the valve cover is worn through.

I am assuming I can change the gasket without pulling the motor? Since I have never taken the valve cover off any advice? Just the bolts on the top of cover? Put some gasket sealer on the half moons?

Anything else?

Reading the service manual it talks about putting sealant on the mating surfaces and half moon and recommends to different types.

• Apply bond TB1541® 1 onto the mating surfaces
of the cylinder head cover and cylinder head
cover gasket.
• Apply Yamaha bond No. 1215 2 onto the mating
surfaces of the cylinder head cover gasket.
• Tighten the cylinder head cover bolts stages and
in a crisscross pattern.

Also do I put the gasket onto the head then put the valve cover on or do I put the gasket onto the valve cover and put the unit onto the head?

I was also reading about adjusting valves and the manual is semi vague??

Drain oil and take off timing cover plate. I am not 100% following how it gauges with cylinder number 3 it tdc? Then how much do you rotate to bring the other pistons to TDC is there marks for the other pistons?

What I like doing is peening the half moon with a punch, 5 or 6 holes and using red loc or some type of locking agent per half moon. This will help prevent any blowouts. Also mcx makes a half moon cover to prevent them from rubbing through, its a aluminum cover thats held in place by the charge tube. Might want to look into that. Hope this helped.

Never heard of the mcx cover......anyone have a picture of that?

peening the half moon does not make sense to me......what exactly are you doing? peening the valve cover/head or the gasket? Curious how this helps?

Thanks for the info!

Peening the area of the head where the half moon sits. Peening gives the sealant something to grip onto.

Took about 1hr to due. Pretty straight forward job and yes you can change the gasket with the motor still in the sled.

You can do the headshim with engine still in also. Just not recommended and too much hassle.... :face-icon-small-ton

Glad you got it done. Did you peen as recommended?

Yup, totally do able in sled. I had to do it because 2 of my half moons blew out. Pretty sure the 90 degree crankcase vent fitting in the valve cover got plugged up. Has anyone ever seen how small the orifice is in that fitting? TINY!!

Numerous engine builders told me not to peen.......so I did not. 6000km on that gasket so I should be good for awhile. :face-icon-small-ton
