Changes for 2009 Yamaha Nytro MTX!!

Just got back from Expo in W. Yellowstone and thought I would share what changes were made on the Nytro MTX for 2009.
1. New springs on the front shocks
2. New clicker shock in rear skid
3. Beefing up the subframe (was not on the sled at show but was told it will be on the production sled)
4. New stickers!
No other changes or upgrade to the front suspension (the XTX, RTX and the rest of the Nytro line up get the new front end geometry changes).
Same track and ski's as the 2008 model. :D

I hope this is not true!!! Why would they not upgrade the geometry on the mtx's? I've got an 08 mtx. I love the sled, but it does suffer from the same front geometry related handling issues that the flatlanders talk of.

What do you mean? The tippyness?

I just bought a nytro mtx and its not the tippiness its how squirelly it is. Its downright dangerous. Im still adjusting.

Just watched the dvd supplied with the 09 brochure and it did not mention the upgraded front end on the MTX at all but it did on the rest of the Nytro's. So I believe that this is the case. The gentleman that I talked to from Yamaha was the main force behind the new tunnel on the RTX SE and XTX and was pushing extremely hard to get it on the MTX. So not a lot of changes but he did say the new springs on the front shocks helped a lot. :D

It's the trail manners, particularly, the way it handles in the corners that bothers me. When in a corner, it's like it all of a sudden grabs and wants to tip. It's unpredictable. I think this is exactly why the short-trackers are shortening the upper ball joint by 2.5mm to help stabilize it in the corners. I've also noticed alot of slop recently in my ball joints and the inner a-arm bushings. I'm pretty sure Yamaha will warranty it, but I'm holding out until they come out with some updated ball joints, etc. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the sled, but really hoped they would fix these things for 09. It also makes no sense that they didn't give the mtx the new tunnel.

Does yamaha have a team of engineers, etc designated specifically for the mountain sleds? I'd be surprised if they do and figure that's why we always get a good all-around sled, but not a true mountain sled.

One more thought about the 4 year warranty. Yamaha knows that there is a problem with the subframe on the 08's and they've apparently addressed it for 09. The 4 year warrantly would seem a whole lot better if they would warranty the bent subframes on the 08's, showing that they really stand behind their products and warranty. I haven't bent mine yet after 998 miles, but it sounds like a matter of "when", and not "if".

Well to let you know the first time I rode the MTX I was coming into a big sweeping right hand turn on a trail and doing a little leaning to compensate for the corner, and the next thing I know I was on my side sliding down the trail. Now of course being a former flatlander that is how I always entered a corner and as any of us who have ridden a sled for lots of years know you always feel ski lift right away, but boy was I surprised at how fast this happened and no chance to recover ( talk about feeling like a rookie ) I have since talked to one dealer and one other rider and they both had the same thing happen to them. This is what I believe is the reason for the new springs on the front shocks for 09.
Yes they do have engineer's that ride the mountians. I spoke to one at the Expo for quite a while and will post any new setup's that I get from him.

Update!

Okay just got off the phone with the Yamaha engineer and this is what he told me is different on the 09 MTX front suspension.
Revalved shocks (same shock as 08 with slightly different valving) with different rate springs. The current spring is a dual rate spring and the problem is it collapses to the second rate ok but doesn't have enough spring to push it back up. For 09 they are going to a single rate spring (it is a 32 neuton millimeter spring). He said to convert that to a US rate spring and measure the old spring for OD, length and thickness of the wire that should get you almost dead nuts on to what we will see on the 09. I am sure someone on here has the knowledge in this department. He said it shouldn't be a problem finding a vendor to get this spring. Yamaha won't have this shock and spring setup available till fall. No change to front suspension geometry like the rest of the Nytro line up is getting.

That is very interesting about the shocks and springs. Did he say if the new 09 springs will be available to replace the springs on the 08 shocks?
I have had the same problem with sudden and uexpected inside ski lift in corners. Haven't laid it down yet, but came close a couple of times.
I did bend my subrame and lower left A arm. Have no idea what I hit to cause the damage. I noticed the problem between rides when the sled was sitting on the trailer. It's apart right now waiting for a new subframe. I also bought a Timbersled barkbuster front suspension, but plan to put the old shocks back on. Also spoke with a Yamaha Product specialist about 2 weeks ago and he claimed no complaints about bent subframes and front suspension problems so it's interesting that the issue is getting addressed with the 09's.
Anybody have suggestions for an aftermarket shock that will solve the problems?

Why on earth are they not going to put the new geometry front end on the 09 mtx? Is it possible that there is something better about the 08 geometry?

gotta remember guys the wider front ends on the xtx and the shortys are not a direct replacement for ours. so they would have to re-engineer the front end for the narrower nytro mtx. they cant do them all, they had to choose and the majority of sold nytros are shorty's. be pacient.... one sled at a time, they fixed the shortys and made a new crossover. maybe next year we will get an upgraded front for the mtx.

i too suffered with the twitchy front end, and wicked inside ski lift when the sled "wanted to". i adjusted the skid, the front end, went with slydog powderhounds and i have a very predictable and well manored sled. i have had the upper ball joints trimmed down 2.5mm on each side but have yet to ride it that way. it will either be better or worse. if it is worse, i throw a 2.5mm spacer in the ball joint end and i am back where i was happy.

i believe alot of the issues we are having with the twitchy front is the oem mountaint skis. these skis have been around since 05 (all non rider forward sleds) they tried to let the skis work for this newer rider forward unit and they just are too aggressive with that kind of weight over the skis. believe me, i adjusted the toe, shimmed the bumpers, swapped the bumpers, tried doo pilot 6.9's (shimmed them too), but the powderhounds work best for me, my sled and my riding style. they may not be the silver bullett but they made a huge difference in the sled for me. ski
