CFI Noisy Fuel Pump

My '08 600 CFI fuel pump began getting noisy. Previously I had never heard it run at all. After noticing the whirring noise it got progressively noisier for the next 2 days but ran fine. Finally as I was climbing a hill it didn't have much power. Anything over about quarter throttle it would just hesitate and bog which I interpreted as a lack of fuel. There were no flashes of the service engine light. The sled has right at 1000 miles on it. Has anyone experienced anything similar? Could a clogged fuel filter cause this problem?

Thanks for any help.

Yes a plugged filter can cause these electronic fuel pumps to whine. I'd be very concerned if you have gotten to the point of losing power from this. These motors will not live long with reduced fuel pressure/volume=lean condition. You should verify fuel pressure ASAP. 58 psi plus or minus 1-2 psi.

just had an 09 d8 in the shop with similar symptoms, pull your fuel pump out and inspect your in tank lines... found his lines to be completely detieriated and the pick ups not hooked up to anything. first time i've seen this in the 5 years i've worked at my local dealership.

My understanding is this is caused because of ethanol in the fuel. Sometimes you may actually be getting more than 10 percent and I "think" if you let it sit for a long time the ethanol separates some and goes to the bottom and corrodes the fuel lines. Don't quote me on this theory though.

What led you to suspect this? fuel pump noise or bad fuel pressure readings?
thanks!

oddly enough fuel pressure was still good, at 59, however the tank was pretty full of fuel, fuel pump was exceptionally loud you could hear it over the sled at an idle, flashed a light in the tank and could see chunks floating, pulled out a couple pieces and figured out what they were... even managed to talk polaris into a goodwill warranty for the customer on the pump ( i couldnt believe it! first good will warranty on an out of warranty sled i have seen them approve in a long time)

I had that happen to a 07 D7, fuel lines in the tank all come apart. But only where the lines were clamped to the fittings did the hoses rot. The engine would run ok as long as you didn't full throttle it. I did hook a fuel pressure gauge to the test port while riding it and the pressure would drop at full throttle. It's possible that you could fix the hoses and replace the filter, everything would be ok. I ended up replacing the pump assembly and filter, now the sled runs great. The dealer also said they have not seen this happen either.

I was in Canada a week ago when my fuel pump became noisy after running out of fuel, I rode the following two days of my trip w/o any problems, the sled ran great but wouldn't pull much more than 8000 rpm which I figured that was due to riding at high elevation. After reading this thread I thought I would look into the fuel pump noise further.

Fuel pressure gauge

You can use a regular automotive gauge that will hook into the schrader valve(looks like a tire valve) at the pump flange at the front of the fuel tank. They have them at most parts houses. Had mine hooked up on a ride trying to figure why it was losing power at wide open throttle and the gauge showed losing pressure. Going from 60psi to 10psi.

fuel pumps are noisey if they are starved or the filter is plugging unless its a chevy then they are noisey anyway
