Caution snow holes!

Just wanted to give anyone riding around Baker a "Heads Up"....two weeks ago I was coming down the trail from the dam and was a few feet above and to the side and the Earth opened up and ate my sled. A hole dropped out from under the sled that was about 5-6 ft. deep....She went in nose first into rocks and the back bumper was almost verticle sticking out above the snow...came out easy with some digging and a snow bungie. The snow was wet and granular all the way down 6ft.deep....easy to dig as we had to make a snow ramp in the front and dig under the back to drop the ***-end down

Sunday May4th I took my wife out to Baker and was on a low ridge behind peanut...dirt and some small rocks were showing thru...I went around the rocks and was on some other tracks and slowed waiting on my wife and the back end just dropped about 4ft deep into very icy hard snow and other rocks....easy dig and it came right out.

I have been riding for many many years(can you recall the John Deere sleds from the 70's?) and have NEVER had snow just fall out from under a sled with a hole that big.

Any rocks or dirt sticking out of the snow will heat up when the sun is out. This heating melts the snow that is near the rock and this will undermine the snow all around the rock or dirt causing a hollow area under the snow.
Do not ride anywhere near protruding rocks or dirt or you risk falling through.

That....or just the ice weasels again.

Drainage ditches in the spring can have the same lurking problem covered by thin snowbridges. Just because you went through a ditch in the morning doesn't mean you'll get through the same in the afternoon. Spring time riding has it's dangers..

Saw that hole on the way up and saw where it must of been you go in. That looked like it could of killed someone. Best stay on the road through there I guess. Hope you didn't get hurt.

Pully system

attached to large tree laying over hole.

Paul 6'3", is standing on the end of the track, machine is straight up and a 136", a 136" hawk reaches just past the bumper of an eight foot truck bed.

The incident nearly caused him to give up motorized snow sports, bruised his ribs, head under water.

What if it had been a much heavier Twoski?

A 503F Hawk weighs in at 400lb's with 9gals of gas.

With persuasion he has three 503F's and two Summits now.

sorta like this?
Yep sort of like that except all my rocks were at the bottom of the hole. I tried to add a pic. but for some reason it would not upload....maybe file size was too big??

BTW...the bumper on the Dragon 800 lived..it of course bent the cheap arse bracket it screws into...2x4 and dead blow hammer and fixed! I have a tricities bumper that I ahd not installed yet..if it was on it would have been bent up pretty bad...got lucky!

Yep you can see it easy on the way up..on the way back it is a little tougher to see..
