Caught in an avalanche this sat!!!

I've been given a second lease on life! BE CAREFUL GUYS! If I had a camera I would have taken pics to show you, but I didnt have a camera.

I was caught in a 300 yard slide that I set off while sidehilling in an area where YOU WOULD NOT EXPECT IT!!! I wound up 150 yards down the hill on under only 4' of snow on top of a huge boulder. Because of the height of the boulder I was under only 4 feet of snow and was lucky enough to have dug myself out. My riding buddy was 150 yrds up the hill looking for me by my sled. By the grace of God I wound up on that boulder and was able to work myself out only because I was on top of that big rock. All the snow that slid around it was 8-15' deep.

I've been riding for 21 years (got my 1st sled when I was 11) and I have never been involved in a slide and thought it could not happen to me because I was a "safe rider" who thought I knew the mountain and snow. The reason why I'm posting this is for you guys to contemplate some things.

1. Because of my ignorance and over confidence I was not wearing a beacon. I ordered one first thing Monday. If you were like me, order yours. My riding partner (my brother) was an absolute basket case after I got out. Don't do that to your family, suck it up and spend $300 on a good beacon!

2. Don't assume that because it doesnt look that steep, it won't slide. I've ridden over this same snow for years without a problem and last Sat. must have been just right.

3. Just be careful guys. It sounds noble to "die doing something you love" but if I had kicked it this weekend, nothing would have been noble about it. Get a dang beacon and make sure the guys you ride with have one!

train with that beacon a bunch and take a avy class if you can find one, it helps a ton. Glad you are ok, spread the word, there are too many people riding without the proper gear.

The avalanche happened in the Snowy Range of Wyoming right off the highway by the big hill that everyone likes to climb by the crapper. It wasnt on that big hill, it was to the far left...if you're looking directly at the big hill

Lake Marie? To the left of the group of trees huh..

The spot you can climb over and hit some good boondocking in the trees.:confused:

Wow! What a wakeup call.
I'm really glad you're alright!

The fatalities have already started here in Colorado and Utah - the ski areas have had problems w/ this year's weak snowpack. Vail actually had an in-area avalanche a day or two ago.

Be careful! Be trained & equipped!

Good luck,

MtnDoo

Glad you got out. Most of us have been preaching for years that it will happen sooner or later. I busted my azz and a sled on a very shallow slope that slid a few years ago.

It's not enough to just have a beacon, you need to know the conditions and abide by the warnings. That is one of the hardest things to do sometimes.

Glad you are here to tell us your story.

Safety - education. The best preventative medicine.

all season?

i wonder if is going to be like this all season since this little snow we got early all glazed over? Now all season long it's gonna let loose. This happened a couple of years ago in MT and a bunch of sledders died.

Snowbird resort in UT had an avy go off over the weekend. Another "in boundry". This is very unusual and concerning, especially since we have not recieved alot of snowpack....

Ryan,

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Glad to hear that you are OK and still kicking:)

Say a "thank you" to the Big Man upstairs because he must have something important for you to do in life:):)

Hope to meet up with you soon!!

As has been mentioned, there were two in-bounds avalanches last weekend - Blue Sky Basin @ Vail, skier caught but not fully buried, no injuries, and one at Snowbird, UT - skier caught & killed.

INbounds. Scary. Avalanches are serious business; I always get a bit irritated when they're looked upon as "cool" or "core" - whether it be skiing, sledding, etc.

Be safe, buy beacon/shovel/probe, learn, read, classes, practice, dig snowpits, all that stuff.
