Cat M8 Vs. Yamaha Apex

I have a buddy that's debating whether to get an Arctic Cat M8 or a Yamaha Apex(not turboed). He's leaning towards an Apex but doesn't like the weight. Does the weight of the apex play a part in comparing these two sleds when boondocking, riding in powder, etc. His main riding area is Priest Lake, Idaho....deep powder, lots of tree's except when you get into the steep avalanche stuff. Based on this info, if you could choose, what sled would you pick?

You dont feel the weight of the Apex in the deep until it is stuck. Just dont get stuck :D

In the pow the apex feels more balanced and really nimble and easy to control (and im only about 160lbs) Smooth power, but on hard pack, spring snow, or when they are stuck then the weight really shows!

M8 is a good all around performer might be better for a broader range of conditions, and easier to get a nice bump in power instead of going turbo (on either).

what type of riding does he usually do?

Without boost, I wouldn't buy a Yamaha anything. The M8 would be a better choice, the Apex doesn't hang climbing from what I have seen. No need to have the weight with the Apex.

no kidding, without boost then its hands down M8, way lighter. if your going boost, then its an actual debate.

sledsavior, no crap hes forcefed. notice the large air filter sticking out of the side of his sled?

Check out my videos of the non turboed Apex in the powder. It is a really fun sled to ride. The weight is not a factor in the powder. It is balanced so well i like it better then my REV. Yeah it may not out climb an M8 on the steep and deep but what does a few seconds matter anyway. It can make it to the top. Just takes a little more skill to get there. Well until he decides to turbo it and then he will be really happy with the sled. Won't want to ride a non turboed sled once he turbos the Apex.

Then comes the turbo

No question, the M8 will be a better sled for him. When he gets stuck, and he will get stuck, you'll be happy he's on the M8. You know your going to be helping him dig out, so make it easier on yourself. I know that from experiance.

Helped a buddy dig out his Apex a few times, and it was enough. He's now back on a 2 stroke.

The Apex is a fun sled to ride, but getting it unstuck just isn't worth it IMO!

I was thinking just the opposite. Without boost it is a debate, with boost it's not.

If your buddy can ride have him buy the Apex. If he can't ride have him buy the M8. To enjoy the Apex you have to understand how to move your seld around without pulling on the weight. This takes some experience. Once you learn how to move your sled with your body and the throttle the weight becomes a lot less of a concern.

Here here!! I'll toast to this!! :beer;:beer; :D

I have now two m-8S had an 06 apex rode it with no Turbo was a big heavy let down. :(going from a 900 Cat piped to a stock apex was like a kick in the teeth:mad: until i turboed it.;)litened it up a bunch still heavy you need about $20,000 to do it rite..
Happiest day was when i sold the apex bought a stock Rev and an m-7 for the wife just went riding no wrenchin'.Definatly go with the M-8 :Not even a consideration in my mind Just my .02:face-icon-small-win

Everyone keeps talking about getting stuck....what's that?!?:D

The Apex is one sweet ride, but you need to run the 4 stroke for a bit to get used to it after a 2 smoker.

Either sled is good IMO...:beer;

I was a Cat guy all my life, had an '05 M7 then got an '07 M8 153". Sold it and now I'm on a T-Apex. One of the best decisions I've ever made. M8 was a great sled, had lots of fun on it. I like everything about the Apex......it is a dream in powder (til I get stuck, but everything is heavy when stuck), great on the trail, awesome climber (300+hp helps:D).

You really don't notice the weight of the Apex in powder cause its so well balanced.

You won't be disappointed with either but I for one will never go back to a 2stroke.:beer;:beer;
