Castle ski report 100cm = 25cm anywhere else so take it for what it is worth.

Here are some pics of the Castle - Carbondale creek area from Feb 28/09. Lots of land mines but will improve with the snow forecasted next week. Was worth the trip as far as we were concerned and my 7 year old son got some real mountain riding experience.:) Ignore the date on the pics, they are from yesterday.

Thought I'd bump this thread.

Rode in behind Castle yesterday, and it was deeeeeep. Probably 40-50 cms of fresh on top of a sun crust, so although there's loads of snow its REALLY unstable. We triggered a pretty large slide while snowboarding down a slope beside one I had just highmarked. There's a buried suncrust that all this new storm snow is sitting on, so all the south facing (ESPECIALLY the wind loaded slopes) are on a hair trigger. We found 2 weak layers during a compression test about 30 minutes prior to the slide, but made a bad decision on a slope that wasn't representative of our testing.

Be safe people. Lots of new fresh, but a bad decision almost led to a burial. Luckily we made a good route choice dropping into the face and the rider was able to cut out before getting caught. Still scared the sh*t out of us though.

4 guys went missing, but I heard they found them. I saw quite a few groups of 4 yesterday so it's hard to say which group, but I have an idea.

It was a total whiteout up high with heavy winds and precipitation, so I can see how they got lost.
