casper mtn

Never rode there. Where do you stay and how far drive to the snow? anybody that can show us around and get us into some good snow?

IMO ... unless you have other business in Casper, I wouldn't bother making the trip just to go ride roads on Casper Mtn. I'm not trying to sound like a jackass, but virtually all land on Casper Mountain that isn't a county road is private and thats only gotten worse in recent years. You can still ride over on Muddy Mountain to a certain point, but I don't know if there would be enough snow at this point to warrant anything longer than an hour trip to get there.

With that said, glad to see there's at least some snow up there so I can go break my motor in at least, its more than we have in Vernal right now :(

I'm from Casper and grew up here. Pics are from Thursday after our first big snow of the year on top of about a 2 ft base. We see snow like this about every 3 years or so lately. If you know where the land mines are, it's as good as it gets. Even the roads were great riding! Now if we only had a better base to go with it!

I plan on riding up on Casper Mountain a few times this season, I've never ridden there before, but I'm tired of just letting my sled sit over the season (I'm a college student.) I have a couple friends who want to go as well (get into the sport) and they have access to a couple sleds, I was wondering where up on the mountain is there to go? I've driven around there a little bit, and one of my friends has hunted the area fairly well, any help on where I should head or what I should watch out for? Any tips would be appreciated

Virtually everything on casper mountain that isn't a county road is private land...combined with the fact that the skiier *******s have basically locked up everything else we used to ride up there the last 15 years or so ... with that said, isn't an awful lot of opportunity for off-trail boondockin ... I mean there is, but its really patchy and deputy dog kinda likes to harass snowmobilers .... don't let him catch you running down the road, haha ... main parking lot is beartrap meadow I dont think they are letting people unload at star wallow anymore .... I haven't sledded up there regularly since the mid 90's and I know property boundaries and whatnot have changed quite a bit since then so I dont even know what the best places to ride are anymore....hell we can't even unload at the family cabin up there anymore and get to the trails :( .... but you can basically head over to ponderosa park and kind of play around there or over to muddy mountain and then over by the archery range, etc and just kinda play around where you can ... probably more than that but thats about all i ever do when I go up there these days. The more snow it gets the more fun it is, if there is a big 3 foot dump anything is fun :)

Appreciate the reply haha, I was kinda hoping for a little bit better response (as in places to ride on the Mountain) but I felt like there wasn't much to offer. But I must agree, 3ft of snow is fun anywhere. The parking Area Bear trap Meadow is that all the way where they close the road off? Or is it the area where the road splits and you can either go left up to the towers, and straight to muddy mountain.

Yes, thats it ... wherel the road splits. I don't think they let you park at star wallow anymore.

Guess they've opened up a new parking lot in the last couple years there by the old mica mine ...?

I'm really outta the loop I guess haha ... last time I tried parking at star wallow, even though it was on the map, I got ticketed....that was 2006 ... haha.

Haha I wouldn't know where the mine is.. as far as I know that is. I'm sure one of my buddies does though. Know of any land mines I should watch out for?

Pretty much everywhere that isn't a groomed trail :)

Still not enough snow to cover everything up ;)

Not sure why people complain about Casper Mountain, a lot of people would die to be able to ride within 15 minutes of their hometown. No it's not a mecca for sledding, but there are plenty of locals who enjoy it. BTW skiers have not "locked" sledders out of any areas contrary to belief.

Oh great lol.. Do you know of any easy way to tell if I'm past the wilderness boundry? I've been looking around on Google Maps and I kinda want to get to a hill east of the Ponderosa Shelter three miles over to the east. The top of the hill runs from southwest to north east.

How so? We used to ride all over the north side back in the 80's and 90's, and now we can't. North 40 (tower loop) isn't [legally] accessible to sleds anymore from what I can tell. That seems to me like its been locked down by the skiers pretty well..? I also used to never get harassed for riding the half mile from the cabin down the main road to the trail either, but I'll get ticketed for sure if I get caught doing that now ...

I'm not ragging on casper mountain, the happiest memories I have in my life are sledding up there .... but there is a lot less of that to ride these days than there used to be.

you can pretty much ride anywhere long as its not east nortgh of the road going up and if so just dont get caught and ya i prolly wouldnt go out of my way to make a trip up there most of the time but has just as much snow if not more then anywhere else in wyoming and no bear trap parking is not at the end of the road were it closes you take a left at the y and its half way to the road close cant miss it and they opened a new parking lot at the end of the raod so u can park closer to muddy but as far as gettin you pointed in a direction to some good riding try round the archery range cant give ya more then that be givin up the honey holes on here :face-icon-small-hap but can show ya round sometime just shoot me a pm and honsetly i think casper mtn has the best boondocking as far as not gettin over you head and having a nice ride
