Carrying a shovel.

Well, after riding yesterday in waist deep snow, I now realize I need a shovel.

Where is a good place to carry one besides of a backpack? I realize a avy pack is a good thing to have and also the best place to carry a shovel.

But, if one were to ride WITHOUT a pack, where would one store ones shovel?

:)

Depends on what kind of sled you have, Doo's have a place under the hood I think for them, on the polaris edge chasis you can bungee it to the gas rack, Or you could buy a seat with a place for it like I did. (BOSS seat)

on my revs, i had a hps can and put the shovel in that side panel and used a small wire to hook it to chain case , the handle i stored it above the chain case and used a zip tie on front end as a loop to hold that end up//,,rattled a little but worked ok

I have a RX ton and store the blade portion of my Survival on Snow shovel inside the right side cover kind of around the chain case. I put two garage wall tool holders on top of my belt cover to store the shovel handle/saw. I put it together when needed.

I really don't like to ride with a shovel on my back much either. I think the times I bumped the kill switch and went *** over tea kettle (it's a four stroke thing) and landed on my shovel (and popped my hydropack bladder I found out later) cured me of riding with something metal on my back. Although, now I wear a tekvest and I don't think it would hurt as badly but, personally I still don't like to pack anymore on my back than necessary on my back (even if that's what all the cool guys do).

Frosty

Thanks guys !

Great Ideas!

I'm liking the beside the chaincase idea, now I'm going to buy a shovel for sure.

Frosty, I agree. Having a heavy bag dangling on my back is not fun. Even if it IS cool. :)

I ride with 2 shovels--the Doo shovel in the engine and an avalanche shovel in my backpack---I have been over the bars more than once and never broke my hydrator. BTW, all shovels should be metal otherwise they are usless to dig on an avy.

I doo have a question for all the guys that don't ride with a pack---where do you keep your survival gear and you avalanche probe? Worthless if you keep it on your sled.

Agreed... What is the use of a shovel and a probe if they are both burried nicely packed away in your sled? It's not really a "cool" thing. It's just practicle. I very rarely use my shovel but when I do it's because my sled is burried passed the top of the hood.

we carry everything in our packs so no matter which sled were on we have our probe and shovel...store exta one on sleds

My sled is an x package. and it should have come with a shovel, but the guy I bought it from I think kept it. Maybe the brackets are still there and I could find one that will fit???

Hmmm...

i build my own tunnel bags that carry probe and shovel, real quick to get to either, dont even tell me about it i dont like stuff hanging on my back and i dont want that graffling hook on my back while im going under trees

I have a friend who just straps to the back of the tunnel. It works but I rather ride with one in my bag.

western powersports has a neat little shovel with a mount for under the hood it has a saw too:D comes in kinda handy if ya go loggin

real handy:eek:

shovel

Sometimes u need both a shovel and a saw, get one that has the saw in the handle of the shovel I also carry them on the sled, rather than my back

I just bungee mine down on top of the gas the on the back and let the handle stick out. Equally as important as the shovel (aside from avalanche rescue) is the snobungee...will save you hours of digging when used properly. A must have.

IF you ride a dinosaur like me (cat 900) there is a built in spot under the seat. Not sure about the new M's

I just keep mine under the seat, along with a snobunjie, extra tools, lunch and the battery, Ken.
