Sorry but I have to disagree. Deterrence is, in my opinion, a far better approach than dealing with the short and long term effects of injuring or killing someone, even if they are a scumbag.

The example I will give you is a store owner openly displaying a firearm on his person. It may deter some less hardened guys but a real hardened criminal will distract you and then put one or two in you then take your gun and your money. I think I would rather give him the money and let him walk away and save my "secret" if I felt my life was in danger.

I had a cousin in Kennewick Wa. that, for whatever reason, a guy tried running my cousin's friend down with the guys car in a parking lot in the middle of the night, the guy just kept coming after him, my cousin had to hold the guy at gunpoint until the cops got there. Cops said he was jacked up on something.
Guy up here in Kalispell went in to rob the local gas station, the guy drew a knife, and the guy behind the counter(which we know) pulled a shotgun, held the guy until the cops showed.
There are a couple others but, it is rare, but when you need a sidearm, you better have one!

I would suggest that anyone that plans on using a firearm for self defense knows the laws both civil and criminal in the state in wich you reside. Consult your attorney because your going to need one. You can't take back a bullet once you dent the primer.

i live in canada, where handguns are very hard to get, legally anyways. about 12 years ago at a bush party just outside of calgary, had a gun put to my head. pretty freaky. and of course no else had a gun, just the bad guys. that is until my buddy and his brother came out of their house with shot guns blazing! moral of the story, making hand guns illegal only keeps them from people who obide by the law, not the criminals!

If you are involved with a self defence shooting and are charged, and are a member of the NRA, they will pay to defend you. One more reason to join!
In Alaska now, anyone that can legaly have a gun and carry it concealed without a permit.
