Carls/Holz Shock Re-valve?

I did a little searching and saw some good posts from last winter of guys who were going to try re-valving their OEM shocks. It seems Carls and Holz were both heavily suggested. I was just curious to hear the thoughts from those who did the re-valving? Who did you use? Was it a noticeable difference over stock?

Thanks!

I blew a seal on my center shock last year so I had Holz revalve my skid for my weight and it was a huge improvement over stock. Great upgrade for the money but I have my skid out right now and it appears my center shock is leaking oil again.

I have done the Carls valving on the last 2 sleds and will do it again as soon as the new one arrives. I have compared them side by side with stock shocks and there is a very noticeable difference. No more bottoming out in the rear. Much more plush/smooth ride up front. They suck up the bumps on a side hill way better so you dont feel like you are getting bucked downhill. Same thing on a whooped out trail.

In my opinion . . . the best bang for your buck on an affordable upgrade for shocks.

Good to hear guys. Now...why did one of you go with Carls and the other chose Holz? Are there differences?

I did the Holz revalve and piggy back conversion on my 12. The shocks on the front worked pretty good but the problem is the skid geometry in the back. The Pro sags almost half it's travel out just sitting on the snow then get's really stiff. I would recommend at least a rear arm conversion from KMOD or Tsled even before a shock change. Or do the front and rear skid shock if you are trying to save money. That would only be about $500 more than the revalve and piggy backs. Raptors all around on a stock skid is better but won't make that sled handle the bumps like it should. If you are riding in deep snow all the time you won't notice but get that sled on a whooped out trail and you will. Or your back will. On my 13 I went to a KMOD skid and Raptors all around. That is a pretty amazing set up, makes the suspension as good as you are going to get but I get that a lot of people don't want to spend that much money.

Oh, I want to spend that kind of money, Kmod, I just don't HAVE that kind of money. Now, a revalve on the stock shock, that I can afford.

Or you could read the post.

Both the 12 and 13 shocks are decent. Unless you are really light or really heavy you aren't going to gain much if at all. IMHO, that's just wasting money. If you do the clicker reservoirs it's $1000. For $500 more than that you can have Raptors on the skis and rear skid.

I am sure each shop has their little differences. I went with Carls because they are within 15 miles of me and are a top notch dealer with a great reputation! They turn them around pretty quick too. I have not had the opportunity to ride a sled with the Holz re-valve, but they are probably good too.

Cheers!

To do the clickers is only 379.00

I did the Holz revolve and clickers on my 12. It was right at $1000 for all 4 shocks. The stock front track can't have a clicker added, he sells you a complete new clicker shock, the cost was about $3-350 IIRC. So no way can you do clickers and a revalve for $379. We run the front track shock as soft as it can be set, the spring just tight enough to keep the collar in so I don't think replacing that shock has much value if you are trying to keep cost down. The tough issue with the Pro skid is the geometry, no shock will change that.

I was meaning the front only should have been more clear. The cost is 174.95 each for the front only on Holz website. I had to check after I had posted but knew it was somewhere close to that.

Probably can't go wrong with either one. I haven't been around carls revalve but I went with Holz because the skid in the Rmk is basically the same as their alpha skid.

Have this setup in a lot of sleds. Local dealer is now installing this setup. If you boondock and side-hill this is a must have. Cheap fix. Just one turn in either direction on the RTS spring will change handling characteristics. Spring length is crucial. Just a reminder, this is a full package and must be installed in total. You will not get positive results by running only part of this package.
The PRO is a very forgiving platform, but foot placement on the PRO has more effect on handling than most realize.

Holz does theirs with WE parts

Carls uses Fox parts INSIDE the WE body.

Different ways to bake a cake IMO.

rebuilt shocks last year

I blew my rear track shock last year. I had people recommend carls cycle to rebuild both my rear shocks. I sent in both on a monday. They are the walker evans RR. I live a good ways away from them. they received them wednesday. rebuilt them same day with fox internals and sent them out same day. I got them friday and was able to ride saturday. I was very impressed at how fast they turned them around. I would recommend them. But now with my sled sitting all summer, It appears that I need to do it again. My sled is almost sitting at the bottom of the suspension. Not very excited about how long the fix lasted.

TRS - Are those valve specs done by either Holz or Carls specifically, or are these totally custom specs?

If they are, who do you have doing the shock work? Is it the dealer you mentioned or are they working with a specific shock shop?

Thanks for the detailed intel!

for re-valving Carl's is tough to beat but they share information with Holz so i'd bet you're pretty close either way.

i'll get some pics of my alpha skid next to a pro skid; there are some significant differences between the two. once big one IMO is the rear shock and arm dimensions/geometry. the holz skid feels more "lively" to me; allowing more pop out of the snow and weight transfer with body input.

Carls re-valved my front shocks last year and I was very happy with it. Much better ride than stock. For the price, it is very hard to beat.
