Carl's 860 into a 2008 Dragon Chassis?

Recently, my 2008 Dragon 700 blew up. I did the "throw money at a problem" and bought a replacement (this time a 2010 600 RMK). So, now I've got a chassis hanging around. I was thinking of taking on a summer project of putting a new motor in the Dragon chassis. The motor I'm interested in is a Carl's cycle 860 built on a carbed 600.

Has anyone taken on this or a similar project? I've heard I will need to change the gas tank because of the fuel pump. What else am I in for if I do this project?

I could just buy another 700 cfi like the one that blew up and that would be easier, but I assume it will just blow up again. Maybe a fancy motor will last longer? Any info or opinions are welcome.

You will need the carb CDI. Same small block motor as the CFI 7 so it should bolt right in. I would guess you can usr the gas tank you have, you will just need a fuel tap for the carb fuel pump.

You could also use a fuel tank from a Polaris shift 600 121. It's the same chassis but has a carb motor in it.

Sorry, but that is not correct, the CFI engine utilize a competley different engine mounting system than the carb engines, both engine strap are different as are the styles of engine mounts and tq stops used. You can reuse the gas tank provided you block off the CFI pump and install a fitting for the carb pick up line, the cfi tank is premarked for the fuel fitting location. You will need the following:

Carb engine straps with rear PTO bracket
Carb TQ stop
Block off Plate for CFI tank
Fuel fitting
Fuel line
Viton Grommet
Fuel pickup screen
Complete Carb Wire harness
Voltage regulator from a Carb model
Carb Model MFD (Some people say the CFI one works, I'm here to say its no the case most everything works but the Speedo, trip etc... ask me how I know)
Carb Airbox Lower mount and upper retaining braket for steering hoop

You will need to redo the PTO side TQ stop as the CFI engine stop will not work, spent a lot of time trying to no avail.

Here are a few pictures of one I did awhile back

CFI tank Block off:

Relocated Tq stop holes

Carb engine mounts installed. The CFI uses a sandwiched style mount on the PTO front and a traditional motor mount on the PTO rear, this setup does not fit/work as it interferes with the carbs.

brad at power addiction makes a motor plate that will mount the carb motor in that chassis. i put a 99 700 motor in my 08 rmk chassis and all i needed was the motor plate, block off plate for the fuel pump which brad also makes, a pickup tube and the rear tq arm (i just cut and welded the stock one). i plan on building another one of these setups as a spare sled. sinple and reliable
