Caribou hunting

So I will try and make this short. A long time friend of mine and I are wanting to gather some info about going north to hunt caribou. Some of things I was wanting some help with is the following things.
1. Where is a good place to go? I know they migrate so we would be looking at making plans around the prime time of the migreating season.
2. We will have to have a guide because we would be very lost in that area with out one.
3. We have been big game hunting for elk, whitetail, mule deer, antelope, and upland birds since we were old enough too, so we have kinda an idea what it takes but could diffently use some pointers as to what worked well for others.
4. What does it take to drive into Canada with guns? I have had a DUI in my past and heard that they won't let me in because of that. Mind you this was 6 years ago.
5. We live in eastern MT, would it be easier to fly with our bows and guns? Only reason for asking is I think transporting the meat and heads would be alot cheaper if we drove rather then flying, but I have no clue never flown before LOL.
6. What is a hunt going to run price wise? I mean we really enjoy ruffing it for the rest of our hunting trips so we don't need speical treatment for this trip. Probaly talking about a 5-7 day hunt.
Hey guys any help would be great. I know I can look on the internet but man where does a guy start? I googled it and came up with more questions that couldn't be answered with out calling them and I hate to call and sound like a retard and kinda wasting their time.
Thanks, my name is Chris

Yes the d u i will keep you out of Canada, a friend had one over 11 years ago and that stopped him, there is a process that you can go thru, he had to get an lawyer, and it still took him about a year and some big bucks...... maybe things have changed by now????? :sorry:

are you after a certain type of bou there are a bunch of differnt ones, mountain they are bc,yukon & some in the nwt & barren ground alaska & nwt quebec barren & woodland newfoundland the smallest there is a perry too.for you there is probably lots of do it yourself hunt in alaska through outfiters, the hardest part for you would be judging size.they are fairly easy to hunt as they are not real smart.the biggest horns are on the barren & mountain but the quebec not far behind.think you can kill 2 in quebec still think they are around 8500$,cant hunt them in the nwt right now there is a ban in bc they are 8500$ up too 10000$.this is my biggest high 380s b&c its a mountain caribou.

Thanks for the info guys I will keep doing some research and see where we come out. I'm really looking forward to doing this in the future.

I'm not much of a hunter but with your DUI your best bet IMO is fly to Alaska and get set up with a guide or an outfitter. I believe most of the open hunts are done for the year but the guide or outfitter would be a better source of info. than I.

Here are a couple I have found that are still able to hunt caribou. Just around Yellowknife area the caribou are off limits. AdventureNW and Arctic Red Outfitters

If it were legal for me I would have said just come up here to Kugluktuk, and would have taken you out on one of my hunting trips. There might be more but most are in the summer/fall and pretty well closed till next year. Northern Quebec also has some nice bou's taken there in the past. Also BC and Alaska. Just have to figure out what kind of bou you would like to get. Anyway's good luck with your future hunt and hope you enjoy it. Most outfitters offer a combo hunt also so you can take a wolf, wolverine, griz, depends on what else you run into while hunting bou and fishing also. The Adventure NW a buddy guides there and says they get some good fishing also which equals good suppers. Just a matter of hitting the right time when the migration is around the camps with most outfitters.

The camp @ Pellatt Lake is in Nunavut so they are allowed to hunt yet and they are Barren Ground caribou. They were open this past fall and will be again next year.
By the way Shane, nice caribou.
