Carbon Vinyl Wrap Install

I did the back portion of the tunnel in a 3M 1080 Carbon Fiber vinyl wrap. I am awaiting B&M boards to complete the project.

The wrap is sold in 60" wide sheets. I purchased 4ft of it to do the rear portion of the tunnel and underside.

Whats needed:
4ft roll of vinyl ($80) [5ft if you want to wrap tunnel front]
bondo squeegee ($3)
heat gun or blow drier
74 - Stainless Steel Zinc coated (p/n:8060-686) ($16)
(32 for bumper, 34 for cooler, 8 for dropouts)

Fairly easy to install. Took about 8 hours

  • remove tunnel roll and gussets, removed bumper, cooler rivets
  • I cleaned then wiped down with rubbing alcohol before install
  • I recommend removing all decals and using goo-gone. I didn't do this!
  • I cutout the dimension and installed top then sides
  • Placed 3-1/4" strips on top of cooler for exposed holes. A bitch to get in there and keep it straight.
  • Installed the wrap on the rear bumper. Used 3 separate pieces at 4" widths. Installed it before underside so rivet backs are covered (32 bloody rivets + 8 for dropouts)
  • Installed the underside
  • cutout cooler holes
  • Rivet the cooler (34 rivets)
  • wrap taillight case and installed
I am still debating to clear coat the wrap. The supplier said it will work but it will change the look of the wrap. It could come out blotchy with an inconsistent reflection.

I will take more pics once the B&M boards are installed in a few weeks.

Excellent thread...Thanks for taking the time to post this... with photos and description...Pretty cool!!

very nice job. I can't wait to do my XF. shouldn't be as complicated as yours because the rear tunnel section is solid. so I won't have to remove the coolers. how hard was the taillight housing to do?

That looks pretty sweet! Can't wait to see it finished. Curious about how it will look with the back section done and not the front. Nice work and thanks for the write up.

Great work!!!! are you concerned that the heat from the coolers are going to bubble the wrap at all? i was contemplating removing my tunnel like some of you all have done but i dont see it necessary to remove the tunnel half... and i wasnt even going to drop the coolers i was just going to wrap the whole thing and then cut out the triangles.

I had my back half covered on my 14 it looks great

My original plan was the same as yours until I examined things.

No need to remove the tunnel half. I removed the bumper and dropped the cooler because I wanted to do the inside of the tunnel and removing would allow for an easier install and the vinyl edges would be protected. Edges are the most vulnerable part of the vinyl wrap.

Also, wrapping the bumper while it is attached would have been a herculean task and the edges would be exposed.

Taking an extra 75 rivets out allowed me to play with my air riveter :laser:

HAHA well no air riveter for me lol all OLD SCHOOL :) i have my bumper removed. i have thought about doing the cooler idea so that i may wrap the cooler like you did.... my concern is the heat from the cooler messing with the vinyl, does the heat seem to effect it? i realize that edges are the WEAKEST LINK so im trying to keep plenty of material where edges will be near so that i dont get any peeling.
ALSO like the idea of wrapping over the rivets for the mere fact of the rivet cutting into the vinyl when putting cooler back on. Rather than wrapping than rivets like you did.
