Been towing a 4 place aluminum enclosed from MN out west for ten years and was looking for better mileage/handling. Did a little experiment this last trip. I boxed in my aluminum tilt bed car trailer. 4 feet high with a tarp and bows to clear the handle bars. The trailer is no higher than my pickup and of course not much wider either, so it is easy to see around.
Now I know this set up lacks the extra room for stuff and does pose a bit more work for loading, but I was after a more compact set up. We rode from the place we were staying so there was no need for daily loading/unloading.
It is hard to compare trips, I know. We tow with a 2002 Duramax @ 70 MPH. Last year we went from SE MN to Kalispell, MT and averaged 11.5 MPG round trip. This year we went from SE MN to Heber, UT and averaged 14 MPG round trip. This years trip had some incredibly nasty winds as well as ice and slush and the car trailer was way easier to pull/handle. From experience I know the enclosed would have been a hand full in the wind we had as well as poorer mileage.
Sorry for the ramble Has anyone else tried this type of set up?
