Cant start ride without it

A roll of TP. When it's cold out, you don't want to be sacrificing a sock, and who wants to use pinecones at the best of times?

Also makes decent fire starter, bandage, etc.

Go read the post on this called "whats in your pack" . It's pinned at the top of the Alaska section. Best thread of this type there has been.

I'd rather freeze to death than carry a tampon so I just ride with a bunch of Polaris guys. If we have to we just light one of them and we're only out like $11 bucks...

Survival

thanks guys alot of good info, we think we are very prepard before we go and then when it happens we find out just how lacking our supplys are. I found a few things that will be added to my pac. Thanks for all your help

i don't agree with the assessment of the "spot"....the spot has a 911 function also...i used it very successfully last year when one of the guys broke his back cornice jumping...we were in a very remote place in wyoming....got search and rescue there in about 3 1/2 hours....we backed it up by sending two guys back to the trailhead, who then drove to a ranch to confirm by phone our needs (life flight helicopter), but the ground search and rescue came with about 7 or 8 folks on snowmobiles.....so it worked well....

rescue missions, and being prepared

it took a bad crash back 25 miles in bad weather last year, when a buddy shattered his hip to realize that i did not prepare myself properly for an emergency. Cutting numerous branches and laying them on the snow helps to retain body heat, also buy new heat packs every year, 8 out of every 10 packs that my riding buddies were carrying in there sled were old and didn't work. also aspirin and lots of it come in handy, 3 0r 4 tablets are not enough. raisins and peanuts are excellent for retaining body heat and energy when you are cutting branches for shelter.
