Can't carry enough fuel!!!

So I have a front mount, which is awesome but I can't carry enough fuel!!! Even with a 5 gallon can on the back on deep powder days I am out of fuel way before I would like to be. So................

I am going to get one of these and paint it up to match the sled!!! Serious!!! Thinking of naming it the "Valdez". This will get me up the trail the 10-12 miles where I can cable lock it to a tree. This way I end up with at least 10+ gallons more than what is in my tank.

What are all of you guys doing that have to run in 10 miles to ride??? Hell I burn at least 2 gallons just getting up the trail!!! I am the type that never shuts it off from 7:30 am until it gets dark.

The sled is an Apex with a front mount tank of around 7.8 gallons.

Just need to figure out an easy quick way to attach it to the sled without having a huge drop hitch!!

I am looking for a quick solution that I can use on trips that require 10-12 miles to get in to ride. I have carried 5 gallons in my lap many times and its not fun or safe. (can hits the throttle!! Not a good idea with a turbo!!)

Fuel Carrier

I was going to suggest just like you posted- put on a hitch, get a skimmer, but that skimmer you showed is really BAD!! You can buy small ones made of UHMW plastic or build your own like we do here. Use small square tubing and build a frame (6' long wide enough for 2 jerry cans wide, with the frame height maybe 8") and hitch, then use either teflon or UHMW about 3/8 to 1/2" thick for the bottom.

Where I use to ride alot in the mountains (Kakwa) we set up the wall tent for the winter. Everyhthing was hauled in on the skimmers. Our camp was 16 miles in from the trucks.

Underneath the sled deck on my truck (SB Ext-cab), 2 skimmers would fit between the wheel wells with the jerry cans, coolers strapped in. Get to where we unload, bolt on hitch to skimmer, hook up and go.

For long day trips from camp we would flip a coin or wrestle to see who pulled the skimmer with the fuel on it-usually haul four 5gal. Ride to where we would unhook the skimmer-top off with fuel and go play. Some guys wouyld pack 1-2 gal cans on the back off the sleds just incase someone would run out or to have enough to get back to the skimmer. After playing all day, we would top off the sleds to empty the jerry cans and then head back to camp and it was 20 miles back to camp from there.

I'll try to get some pics-my pictures from years back will have to be scanned in and I think one of my skimmers is in my Seacan.

Gas

Well sounds like some of the guys around here! Running to the bar all day and Apex is thirsty. Vector burns less then half the fuel when riding with same guys.
New Nytro turbo on sunday got towed the last 1/2 mile to truck cause was out of gas!!
Vmax 4 turbo was better then stock or mod motors on gas but when you crank the boost hey you need fuel!
Did you ride with Smail Peformance Apex yet?
Race gas company will love you guys!!

Dave,

Yep she drinks a ton of fuel!!! I haven't met up with Derrick on the hill yet. I got the new label for the controller and man what a difference!!! I can actually see now. Thank you for getting that out so quick. I will be out Sat and Sun this weekend to burn more fuel!! My guess is I will need 15-18 gallons to run hard all day. At least I am getting a good deal on the fuel!!
Burned several drums already.

me personally i would make one and put a top on the skimmer, people will be stealing your gas even if its locked up but good luck, maybe put two cans on the back of the sled. Sled looks good by the way!!! :D:beer;:beer;:D

Has anyone ever fab'd up a new tank for the front mounts? Haven't heard/seen one yet, but you could use a lot of room under that seat. Or, maybe the primary and secondary tank idea ... ???

I was looking at how much room there would be under the seat..... but man that would be cost/time prohibitive. I really don't want to carry all of the fuel all of the time anyway.
