what we have seen... in the car and you get turned around... I have heard that people have been able fly in...

No chance. We drove 15hrs and got turned around. Atleast Cooke was only another 9 hours from there......:face-icon-small-sho

I'm positive you can't cross with a DUI at all becuase its a criminal charge. you need to call border services and talk to them, Your buddy can maybe get pardoned of his DUI charges or something similiar that will allow him to legally come into canada.

If they check him your probably screwed. word was that this was going to be relaxed a bit, not sure how far that process has gone, but I would be very weary.
He can get "rehabilitated" but thats not an easy thing to do.

if they check ur done.....i have buddy that worked as a bouncer back in the mid 80's......got stabed in the back and beat the guy silly and was charged with attempted murder (guy went into a coma) and now he cant cross your border and the BC laws on DUI are getting preety stiff. good luck.

he could defintely fly in, driving its a 50/50 they find it on your record they wont let you in. Had a buddy went with us all the time then we finally had to go in once and he had to stay behind. Kinda wierd all depends on who you get at the crossing.

Definitely call border services to find out for sure. I had a DUI (im canadian), up here it is a criminal offense, after 5 years it is removed from your criminal record (here anyway) then you dont have to worry. After I got my license back (1 yr) I inquired about crossing the border because I wanted to go pick up a trailer. US border services said that it was no problem having it on my record as it is not a criminal offense in all US states, however if it was the other way around, US resident coming to Canada they would not be allowed to enter as it is a criminal offence everywhere up here. I have crossed many times in the last few years with no issues.

I have one, I'm Canadian, and I cross lots, and I'm always the driver. I just tell them straight up at the border that I had a DUI and as of yet I haven't had any issues. Imported a few small vehicles last year too, not that it's really relevant to this, but it didn't raise any flags.

If it was 10 years ago or longer and he got the dui in the US he can go to Canada no problem ,if under 10 he has to either get a pardon,or pay a nice hefty fee to go up and they still might not allow you up.

12 years ago we drove to Canada. One of my buddies had a DUI years previous, he wasn't driving. They searched our vehicle and we were stuck at the boarder for hours. They wouldn't let him through, made us turn around and drop him off. I don't know what it takes to get it wiped off of a persons record but if they stop you he won't get across the boarder.

Crossings

I'm sure it all up to the officer at the time, seeing the fact of a DUI still remains but sometimes I know these super cops are on a mission to save the plant or just to get there nuts off. I would call the border and check to see what there thoughts are...get his/her name to use as a reference if they say yes so you have something to go back on if you show and some hero says no.
Yes I'm angry with the border crossings! Do avoid nelway into salmo bc and Robertson into rossland bc...nothing but trouble for me over the years and I have never had a criminal record but they sure make you feel like you have one.
On a better note...port hill idaho via creston bc is a thumbs up and have had good luck crossing back into Canada from there.

We have been very successful in the past of getting guys in with DUI's. The protocol we were told to follow is as follows....

~Figure out Which Border you are going to cross at...
~Call ahead and provide all information on the individual that is crossing with DUI
~Provide time that you will cross at so that they expect you.
~Bring as much personal identification that you can.

Got four people across just last year alone that way. Not saying it is the only way, or a sure thing, but so far has proved successful.

had a 15yr old dui and they turned me and my family around at the border, after many hr's of b.s. from some fat azz rmcp tough guy. many hr's the next day after driving 6hr's to another port, an essay written, around $600 paid, i got rehabilitated. then they proceded to empty everything from my truck to find nothing before we finally went on our way. i had been there 5 times prior to this trip with no issues. although my rehab paper is suposed to be good for the rest of my life i probably wont go back.

Screwem, find someplace to spend your money in the US.

I have never had a dui and have never been convicted of any crimes, haven't even had a traffic ticket for 25+ years...but i did get sick and tired of being treated like a criminal from both sides. Haven't been to canada for over 10 years, use to go fairly regular before then. I'm sure the bs crossing has just gotten worse.

Went with a buddy of mine the last two years, he has a DUI. Both times they let us through, no problems or second questions and he was driving. How are they going to know if you have a DUI? You give them your passport not drivers lisence. We lied when they asked if we ever had been arrested..
