Can you paint Rev side panels?

Anyone have any ideas about painting the plastic on a Rev? Can I? What paint should I use? Any special prep need to be done? Will it stick and stay on long term? Thanks

I've seen many side panels painted, but I do not know about the durability or how they did it. If your serious, I'd pull one of your panels off and take it to a body shop. They should know what would be best.

You can paint the side panels. The question is: Are you going to ride it and never scratch the paint? Never roll it over. That is where I would think the problem would be.

me and my dad rode all of last season with painted side pannels. held up great, only place it really chiped off was by you feet from kicking the snow out of the running boards.

oh yeah, both are yellow XRS side pannels.

I did mine a few years back (hood and side panels). Alot of prep, sanding and cleaning, painted it with krylon fusion.

It held up alot better than expected in the bushes! It actually didnt even look that bad when i wrote off the sled, it only cracked up the paint in one spot...

The concern I would have is will the paint flex with the side panel without cracking or flaking off ?

There must be some sort of paint you can get that would be flexible.

We used to buy paint for RC trucks for painting the clear Lexan bodies that was very flexible. Could deform the RC truck bodies lots and paint never came off.

Krylon Fusion was mention before. It is made for plastic. I have done a couple of junker hoods (aftermarket zx) and it didn't hold up too bad. The cover wore it in some places. I haven't see it crack off though.

Check out my pics on my myspace, thoses sleds were all painted with automotive paint. And they hit rocks trees and ice all the time!!! LOL

Thanks to all! Love to see what some of you have done with your Rev's. So far it looks as if the old rattle can Krylon Fusion may win. I thought the sleds the post above me had were just outstanding. Cool stuff.

So I have painted the back seat plastic area so far on my wifes 600SDI. So yes all of the paint work is being done on her sled and she has a sled wrap on the way that I will be installing as soon as it gets here. I used Krylon Fusion as suggested and so far(in the garage it seems to work). But as you can see I have not touched the side panels yet!

So by the pics you had available, it appears that you had them painted in a booth and sprayed? Did they just use auto paint? The red Rev you have is really nice looking.

paint

u can get a flex agent to put in the clear coat or if u want to single stage it u can use it that way to just alot of prep work plastic is a pain in tha a$$

I teach colision and refinishing at wyo tech, so I paint them there, yes it's automotive paint, I prep and spray them just like they do on plastic car parts, stuff sticks to cars in a 75 mph wreck with another car, so..... I've done probably 200 hoods and side panel sets.

Camerons sled we went all out because he bent his bulk head 140 miles into riding late season, so while we had it apart we said what the heck. Lots of work and looooong hours into that one, wouldn't do it again unless the money was right. It's being featured in some snowmobile and chicks in bikini's calendar though so that's cool!

Thanks for the compliment on the rev, did that one at the middle of last year, it's bounced off a couple trees, been on it's side and had to replace the bumper because the lefty throttle I stupidly had on it pinned full speed into the front of a trailer, paint held up good, never even cracked.

Hey, THANK YOU for the advice!!!!! Wish I was a bit closer, I would bring the side panels over to you! Really amazing stuff. Going to inquire here locally with a guy in Reno that does Harley paint jobs and see if he is game. Thanks again.

spray cans are bad. look good for a ride then done.
Yeah it definately won't hold up. I pm'd a guy how to do it, if you want to ship me parts, I can do some before the snow hits big time, but I will be busy as heck after that. $600 for all plastics, hood console, belly pan seat back etc. that's one color, airbrushing and multiple custom effects cost more.
