Can Messing with Sled? Is is Possible??

07 D7, all stock except for secondary clutch spring and can. Some of you might remember me fighting with this sled trying to figure out its loss of power and cutting out problem (thought it was fuel related). Today being at a total loss I popped the old stock suitcase back on because I had heard of problems with some aftermarket cans. Rode the piss outta that machine around my farm, stop go, wide open pulls, over and over again, catwalking and just plain abusing and it would not do its bog or cut out. Is it possible it was the can the whole time???? It did seem to start having problems as soon as I put it on. You experts out there let me know what you think. I am not getting excited too much as of yet because farm riding and mountain riding are two different things and it might not run good once I get there but compared to yesterday this is a different machine.

Not sure about making the CFI run crappy but have first hand experience with sled running crapy because of a can. It is not uncommon to have the inside of can separate and cause sled to run lousy.

ABSOLUTELY!!!!

If any part of an exhaust system is not flowing enough to let out what needs to go out, then the excessive backpressure will cause the engine not want to increase in RPM until the exhaust has had a chance to recover...let out what it needs to be free again. Basically the engine is having an asthma attack when this happens. Same thing happens in cars and trucks when catalaytic converters fail and plug up/restrict.

About 5 years ago I fought 2 defective cans that caused bog issues, poor runnability, no power. After spending a couple weeks trying to figure out the problem, with my side panel open at a stop as I was trying and revving the machine to go as it bogged, out of anger I kicked the can with my boot and the sled shot off like a rocket and ghost rode down the trail a ways.

Since we were out of town and i didn't have a spare can only tools, I spent an hour with 2 long prybars prying out the baffle inside the can. The sled then ran like it had before I installed the can. Got the can warrantied only to have it happen again. Switched brands of cans.

Everything has to perform like a well rehearsed symphony. In the old days the silencer was just that, a silencer. Now it is a critical part of the exhaust system. Large belly pipes that build big high rpm horsepower rely on the silencer for backpressure.
So, it can go the other direction of what Diamondave stated as well. There is a very small window between flowing too much and not enough. You can see that the flow of these pipes are very precise. And if the can doesn't have enough restriction the pipe won't have enough back pressure to function correctly. If the can flows to freely it can cost you performance and rpm too.
The other thing to consider is that if your pipe isn't functioning properly, then the fuel injection might not be able to compensate. Causing the issue to seem fuel related.
