Can I legally ride my sled to the store?

It is snowing pretty good here in Vancouver Washington and I remember seeing some sleds on the news in Seattle last year. Can I ride my sled on city streets legally once they are covered in snow?

I want to ride it to Fred Meyer in the morning (we have about 6-8 inches if that makes a difference).

Thanks!!

Fred Meyer

Fred Meyer is a grocery store like Safeway, Albertsons or Kroger. They are owned by Kroger and also have apparel and a home department.

Here in Montana we can run atvs on the street if they are licensed for street use, and have mirrors and horn. Dont think a sled would work. Had a friend ride down town once dont know what got him in more trouble that or when he out ran the cops. Too bad for him they followed his tracks to his house:D
Anyway good luck.

Legal in West Yellowstone. Cooke City too. At least it is never enforced if it is not legal.

It's actually illegal in Cooke to ride down 212 in town. You can cross it but not ride down it. I've only seen it enforced once when the snowmobile ranger guys were there though.

last season some guy had a gun pointed in his face for riding on a city street somewhere in the states, I forget where. I think that cop got suspended, anyone remember that?

The answer is probably "NO" , in Montana public roads can only be ridden on if they are impassable by wheeled vehicles. I am sure Wash. is similar.

It was Denver when they had that crippling snow storm a few years back. The cop was off duty neighbor and had a grudge against sledders. I believe the sledder and his brother kicked the chit out of him and took his gun away...

Nebraska, it is legal. Check your local laws but dont take the first knee jerk answer from dmv.

In Nebraska this question was asked when a friend went down to the DMV and wanted to get a license for his sled. Clerk answered "no such thing" The guy was persistant and asked for supervisor and finally after some discussion some ole timer that had been there forover pulled out a dusty registration book and sold him a permit/license.

Legal or not

If my family needed food, and the road cant be traveresed by other means, I wouldnt hesitate to ride my sled on the road to go buy food. probably not legal, but, you have to do what you got to do to survive, obay traffic laws and make sure your story is belevable.

go for it. if you are reasonable about how you do it the cops wont bother you. the ones in renton thought it was cool. in other words ride it like ya own it not like ya stole it!

Obviously its going to be at their discretion, but it is a $160.00 ticket in WA (or so Ive been told) I dont think the cops are going to be to worried about you. Western WA shuts down with more than 1 inch of snow. All the cops are stuck at home:D

It's a little bit different here in rural Newfoundland, but I rode to school almost every day on my sled, along with going to the store, to gas up, and to visit my friends. Most of the local roads are used just as much by sleds as vehicles in the winter.

Everyone knows how to respect traffic, and uses the shoulder of the road and the ditch. I've never heard of anyone having trouble with the police.

Ride?

Do they sell TWO STROKE OIL AT Fred Meyer? Should be OK!
