The Callaghan will once again be open to sledders on Friday May 16th and a big protest ride is planned for that weekend. We need to get as many sledders out for this to show the goverment boys that this is an important area for us and it needs to be reopened. The riding is still great up top so don't put your sled away untill after this ride. More info about were to meet/park will follow. Also you can check out http://www.snowmobile.ca/

Can you explain? "The Callaghan will once again be open to sledders on Friday May 16th and a big protest ride is planned for that weekend".

Is it opened to sledders on May 16th? If so, what is there to protest? Confused- :confused:

It is only opened from May 16th until the fall and then closed again. We are protesting just to get a route to the back country so we can pass through the "Olympic" zone and cross country ski area. In other words.....you are not allowed to ride Callaghan during during the winter months.

I'll be there to support the cause and because it is one of my favorite riding areas!

I am sure that when they reilize how many of us will be up there and how much snow there still is they will shut it down till summer. Wouldnt suprise me with these idiots controlling our country! Cant wait to get back up there though!

Thanks! Have ridden there only once, is crossing the lake the only way through or can sleds get around the lake? In other words.....do they only open it so late because they know the lake will be thawed and there will likely be no access anyway?? Good luck with the ride and re-opening!

Rode there last year on the 23rd of May and it was still iced over pretty good.It doesn't have to be real hard when you go across it at 70+ miles per hour. I agree it is the BEST place to head up to the Ice Cap.

Good people for a good cause.

Not from your area. But ride on. Love to here of any sledder making a show to keep or get something open. I don't want to have to explain to my grandkids how I could just take off and ride anywhere. And now you kids only have a few designated trails to ride.
Have Fun!!!!!:beer;

Still lots of fantastic riding guys so make sure you come out to show your support on the 17th of May! Lake will still be solid as a rock with this cold weather!

With the winter we are having we should get quite a few more rides out of there!! Its going to be nice to rip across that lake again. knowing what your about to get into!!

So I read the link Ray posted, but I didn't see anything about parking and access?

The plan is to meet at Alexander Falls.....if you remember waaaaay back when we used to ride Callaghan, there was a road off to the left about a KM before the big bridge before Callaghan country. That is where all the rentals would go. In regards to parking....I am planning on driving up the old logging road as we did in previous years.

Last year in May they plowed to the bridge past Alexander falls. I suspect it will be the same this year so you can forget about meeting at Alexander falls. If they plowed to the Ski jumps again there’s a chance that we can offload at the bridge unless they’ve put up no parking signs.

If they did that, I’m going to offload at Brandy wine and come in from the back of Callaghan Lake. I was at Brandy wine Sunday; you need to drive up about 3K from the parking lot. We looked over to Callaghan Lake and it didn’t look soft (not a track of any kind on it).

I should have taken a picture but I didn’t think about it until afterwards. Our ingenious powers to be stuck a bunch of gross looking signs in the middle of pristine wilderness (the area just behind the snow cat) marking the border of the non motorized zone. The signs themselves look worse than anything else I’ve seen up there. What’s next, Mountain Equipment Co-op billboards to help support protection of the environment? I respected the border, but on the 16th I’ve setting tracks right past the signs. Then I’m taking pictures of it and sending it to the press to see what John Q public thinks looks worse, a sled track in the snow or a big ugly plywood sign on the glacier?

My $0.2

Calling for HOT temperatures on Saturday in the upper 20 degree mark. The snow might be slushy and the lake may be open on the ends so bring lots of sunblock and make sure you keep her pinned coming across the water!! Hope to see lots of people there on Saturday.
